Well this is a big question but in general the two most important things about a successful website are quality relevant content and quality backlinks.

At the beginning, focus all your efforts on the content. Make a worthy and unique content that others would be interested in reading and then everything starts to build up.

Quality content means no typos ( like the one in your thread title )

imo start small, and add. don't go for huge straight away.
