The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

you can do it with most hosting, you need php/msql available though.

nampros uses Vbulliten, its about $140 if I remember correctly.

You need PHP4 and MySQL. I just made one using SMF, have a look:

The initial install was easy as pie, but I had a little trouble with mods (extensions).

You can start small. Basically you need

An active web server
PHP Supported
MySQL database available (1 at least)
Forum Software

You can have the first 3 things with purchasing a web hosting plan. However, you should decide about the 'forum software'.

If you want a free forum, you can try phpBB and If you want to pay, vBulletin is worth the money.

But remember, when choosing your web host, what space you need, how much monthly bandwidth you predict..Also remember, that things start really small!

Looks nice, I just launched a smf forum and found a few bugs I dont like. also, alot of features and functions I want smf just doesnt have. Just bought v-b license and working on install and importation.

My advice to the original poster, if you think you'll do well with your forum go for the vbulletin license right off the bat instead of having to deal with importation into vbulletin from another forum software. VB is the best out there hands down.

I would suggest a combination of Joomla and smf or fireboard. It's always nicer to have also a cms included so that you have a frontpage.

Also important is to have patience because it takes time to build up your members area. It's not that easy to do.

I would reccomend Simple Machines Forum also, if you're looking for a free forum software. PHPBB is a good forum software, but it attracts lots of spammers and bots because they dedicated all their time to find ways to spam phpbb boards. SMF is a great alternative, and they also have mods for seo friendly URLs and stuff.
