According to your opinion, how often your website design should be updated? What website design updates are the most important for a website? What advices would you provide for people who are going to update their website design?

this is one of those variable type questions where most people answer "depends" but if you take out the whaat kind of site and etc details out then id suggest never and always. what i mean is find an overall theme that the majority is alright with and then change your banner for holidays and days its nessasary to your topic, and there other thing besides the banner that can be changed for holidays (ie javascript snow for christmas)

The reason i say this is im taking into account familarity, for example look at http://gamewinners.com and then check http://web.archive.com 's version of the site in the past for the most part gamewinners theme almost never changes, and so if i want a cheat i can go there (picking it first becuase of familiarity) and knowing exactly how to navigate (becuase of familiarity) and those two things are major reasons for themes and theme changes, also taking into account the number of problems that can arise from changing themes, like for example MY NEW THEME DONT WORK and your visitors suffer.

So thers a few points to consider.

Peace

I think that if updates can bring the certain improvements for your website design you can perform them as often as it is possible!

I disagree. changing the design multiple times in a short period of time will just annoy some users.

I would say..... every 6/months or a year.

I would also suggest doing it not near special days such as christmas if you offering a service of selling something. Because your just wasting an excuse for a offer. IF you do it not around special dates (which you can already use as a reason to have a offer) you can say "To celebrate the release of our new design we...."

I totally agree with that!

I wouldn't even do it as frequently as every 6 months - swap out graphics for more appropriate seasonal ones, but not a full redesign.

Form should follow function. Don't just redesign for its own sake, redesign to accomplish a goal - increase conversions, increase newsletter signups, improve your click through rate, improve site stickiness, better organic search rankings. If you're doing goal-oriented redesign, measure before/after to see if you're achieving what you set out to do.
