Last night I found a keyword .info domain with 800,00 search results. Went to bed, woke up and I was about to register it and it was taken!

It was registered just hours after I went to bed.

Today I was building a list of possible domains. Re-entered my list and BAM! 30 minutes later someone registered one from my list (thankfully it wasnt a favorite this time)

Im not making this stuff up. I checked the who is for the register date.

How is this happening? I find it hard to believe a domain just sits there for 20 years then the day I decide to ad it to my list its registered.

Is it possible Im seeing them right as it drops and then someone catches them? These arent expired domains Im searching they are just regular handregs.

Best registrars IMHO are NameSilo, Name.com, Uniregistry, and Hover.com, in that order. :)

My ranking is based on overall customer service experience, trust, and free features included.

I have never tried Uniregistry or Hover but I was thinking about trying Uniregistry soon. I have heard good things about Uni.

As for Name.com, It was a PITA for me to transfer a few domains (1 at a time) out of there on different occasions so I won't use them again because of that.

A few years ago I used to use GD and NC. Now over the last two years I've had a chance to fully experiment and try about 20 different registrars. So it has helped me narrow down the best registrars. I prefer to use the best ones I've found.

Oh yeah, same here. You have to go with who has been best to you. No sense in rewarding the PITA ones. I have one registrar that use just for keeper domains that I am developing and one for sales or temporary till I decide to develop at a latter date.

I don't want to keep all my domains at one registrar, just in case something goes wrong. That way if something does, I will still have some of them at least.

I didn't plan on buying as many domains as I have bought. Some of the ones I bought to build sites on are just sitting with a few temporary pages till I get enough time to work on them. I have too many going right now that I am working on. So some domains just sit till I can get to them. Some I have even put for sale banners on, just in case I get an offer that is good enough for me to let go.

I'm guessing the frequency it happens is roughly proportional to the number of instances that this type of thread appears.

I've heard it speculated that sometimes prior searches may show up as "suggestions" on other requests that result in taken names but I've never been interested enough to find out. I imagine it occurs less now that the suggestions are likely to include hundreds of gtlds with exact match.

There are psychics on the net who just know when a domain was searched for.
They are the ones snapping them up.

It happens when i use godaddy and i dont use it anymore.

Yep. Same here. Will never use GD's WHOIS after being burned at least a dozen times before I realized what was going on.

To avoid the paranoia and losing domains, use this site:
internic.net/whois.html
There's no spying in what you're looking for.

Domainers think alike. Especially where the keyword has 800,000 searches reported by Google. Many domainers use these kind of metrics to decide what to buy. So then it comes down to simple statistics. Hundreds (if not thousands) of domainers are looking for high search volume keywords that are unregistered. What are the odds that two domainers will have the same idea at pretty much the same time? It's going to happen. And the one that didn't get the domain is going to think it's a conspiracy (though it could be... but probably not in most cases).

Another good whois to look for domains and not worry about registrar interference is right from icann:

It happens to me every time there is a sale. I don't mind though, it just means I probably picked some good ones that another domainer also sees the value in.

What has happened to me with Go daddy let me registered domains, and then said that they someone else owed... Which I found :xf.confused:weird, but they refunded me my money back...

I've had that happen too but I found it to be a momentary glitch in their system I guess. It only happened to me 2 times in the past 12 or more years..

All this discussion is worthless if Verisign are still selling their searches.

This has happened to me many times over the last fortnight, to the extent where I am sent a "congratulations" email for acquiring those domains only then to realize they are missing from my collection.

That is not good.

This happened to me to one too many times...so now I force myself to make the decision on the spot.
