Last night I found a keyword .info domain with 800,00 search results. Went to bed, woke up and I was about to register it and it was taken!

It was registered just hours after I went to bed.

Today I was building a list of possible domains. Re-entered my list and BAM! 30 minutes later someone registered one from my list (thankfully it wasnt a favorite this time)

Im not making this stuff up. I checked the who is for the register date.

How is this happening? I find it hard to believe a domain just sits there for 20 years then the day I decide to ad it to my list its registered.

Is it possible Im seeing them right as it drops and then someone catches them? These arent expired domains Im searching they are just regular handregs.

So you think you are the only one registering dot info names.
there are hell lot of people out there. This happens now and then, nothing new.
just look behind your shoulders when you are regging names. somebody is watching.

There have been numerous threads on this forum about the superstition behind this. Is it true or not? It really depends. Are you using the same registrar to check availability each time? If so, which one is it and what happens if you try with some different ones?

This, I've stopped checking for availability with GoDaddy unless I'm registering a domain within the hour because almost everytime I have the domain has been gone within a few days. The only registrar I trust with availability checks (when I use one) is NameCheap, never had issues with them.

I highly recommend namesilo.com it is my main registrar, good thing about it is, it makes a list the domains you have checked even if you are not bulk checking domains and i put them in my cart and after a few days later i get in and buy them and all of them still be available mostly...

I use NameCheap to check the new gtlds and cctlds it is very good too...

I basically only use GD for availability checks when I go to hand reg a name from the drops, and I can't remember the last time something like this has happened to me.

If you like the domain, especially a dropped one, then check and register it. Otherwise, someone else will check the same droplist and register it. It's simple, don't look for magic when it's not there...

Yeah, I use one of the whois sites to check availability first. Then I go to GoDaddy (if I am using them) and register it right away. I have searched GD at night without buying and the next morning the name I was wanting was reg'd.

After checking the who is it was clear to me that the purchase was legit. It was a scientific domain and it was purchased by a science corp. What I want to know is how?

Did it sit there for 20 years and then someone snagged it up that day coincidentally? Or was it possible that it was deleted, then available again and THEN someone grabbed it?

Im new to the whole drop name deal so Im not 100% sure how it works. I can tell you though it was just a reg hand reg.

Just tell us the domain...

If the domain is available and you want it, best not to wait :)

Also check multiple WHOIS search. Sometimes they might be cached with old info. I had this happen a few times.

I have had this happen three times over the last year when searching with NameCheap. All three times, I searched for the domain (one of the three was extremely unusual).. and I went back the next day to register and it was gone.

I no longer trust NameCheap.

I suggest using NameSilo, Name, or Uniregistry.

I search on Namecheap all the time and have never had one registered by someone else after checking it. Were they regular domains or premium/auction names?

I usually always check whois.com when just looking for a domain. Then once I found what I want then I go to registrar and get the domain. Since GoDaddy has a rep for this, when I use them, I actually won't type the name in till after I enter a coupon code with a name I am not getting. Then once the coupon is accepted I then delete the name I wasn't getting and enter the one I am getting. I do this just to be safe.

These are regular domains. One was very unique. The other two were not exactly common things I think most people would be looking to register. Two of the domains I was looking to register for personal use. One domain I thought might have value for domaining.

This is why I don't use Namecheap any more for searching. To be honest, I think NC is better than GD.. ethically, etc. But Namecheap is an expert at curating its public relations image. They are better than GD. But there are of course better options than Namecheap out there.

Were you able to find something else for personal use?

Most of the time I use whois.com or who.is if whois.com doesn't show correct/updated info. I only search for a name at Namecheap after I look in whois.com or if GoDaddy says it's not available after whois.com says it is available. I have searched for names a Namecheap before and didn't run into this but I have only went back a couple of times so who knows.

Namecheap is by far the best registrar I have dealt with and their support has been the best I have ever dealt with. I have only dealt with about a dozen registrars though so there might be better ones out there, I just haven't dealt with one. I have been thinking about trying a few others out there to see how they are by just registering 1 domain and test out the support, control panel, etc.
