I am thinking of starting a small .Mobi template designing firm.

You would get a complete template for your .Mobi including a small header.

All of the basics. Do you think people would buy?

You would get a custom form background if your site was going to have one.

I thought about taking it a step further and completely developing the site so all that you would have to is promote it.

How much would you guys pay for something decent like that.

Or am I just looking at a market that isn't viable?

Thanks for your input guys. :)

Templates

I'm sure that there are plenty out there, I suppose it depends on how 'constructed' your templates would be?
I have 100's of domains that I would develop & host if I could fill out a simple template for each one (I'm looking at 'directory' type sites - incredibly basic with contact details etc plus a click through link to call the company (I.e. a "call now" link)
If you have any sample sites & an idea of cost I'd certainly take a look.

I'd say the market is definitely there, even though you're a bit early. At the same time, being early to this game, can VERY WELL be your advantage. If you're going with templates, i'd price them around the same as regular html website templates. If you're going more advanced and deliver customizable options, i'd look at the flash template pricing.
Leave room for quantity sales, where multiple domainers can purchase the same template. just change out the colors, header and logo. but also offer the option where domainers order fully customized and unique templates. basically, do what's already done, just coin it for mobile use. example: http://www.flashmint.com << from a pure standpoint of site structure and offerings.

Best of luck, i think it's a good idea and would serve tons of .mobi owners!

I think - and hope for the "ecosystem"! - there is a market for this, IMHO ... perhaps a set $Xx fee for a choice of template options and then a customized price on top of that for logos and site development? How much could be customized to the template(s) by the purchaser? :gl:

I'd probably pay low - mid $Xxx for a small site, customized with logo and layout, tie-in with Google search results, etc. and leaving the SEO and promotions to me, and may even be interested in your special service for a unique .MOBI after Labor Day! :music:
Thanks and enjoy your summer!

Alright. Thank you guys.

What all would you expect in a unique mobile template?

I'd expect a simple design that loads fast.
I've always been a believer in modular built sites where i can work with a central frame, but can change the colors, logo, tag line and links to be my own. the rest can be standard, because my message/topic is what outweighs competitors.
basically, to almost speak in layman's terms: a CMS system for mobile browsers. static structure, easy to change the appearance and the content.
easier said than done, i'm sure. ;)

If i have a special project, i'd look for a unique concept that would have to be custom coded/designed.

Hope this give you some level of idea of what i'm thinking about.

Get it done, it's a good idea, don't let anyone stop you!

Just to add...

If you're looking at fee structure; it depends on whether its a multi-use template for a one-off fee or whether you charge per template?
Personally, I'd be looking for a multi-use template that I can use many times over.
Then you also need to look after your re-sale rights.... would you sell the template giving the buyer the right to copy & sell your templates to 3rd parties etc..? or on a strict 'single user' agreement?

Either way though, if you can do a good job of it I think you'd be onto a winner..... it's such early days that you're bound to pick up the work (1st mover advantage & all that).

Would you think something like http://www.integrityebooks.com/mobi/3.png with a nice logo of course would be worth any money?

I am trying to figure out what layout to use.

I think this would work best for the mobile user.

That logo took 10sec to create. :D

this is my concern, it took 10 secs to create. you're early in the game, much of your success is going to depend on a well thought out and solid game and design plan. get to the drawing board and think about layouts, google for existing mobi sites and build your own mental repository of what's working and start building your designs from that. i can assure you that it's going to take longer than 10 secs ;)
the ones that are going to follow you to represent your future competition will bounce of your weaknesses and improve upon them. plan wisely, the design you've shown in your screen shot cannot be the ultimate result.
you'll need at least 40-50 designs to start with, cover multiple topics. From Animal & pets to Art to Books & literature to Business & Finances.... the list goes on.
It's not going to be an easy process, but i'm sure it's going to pay off when domainers can rely on one source for .mobi templates.

Yes, I think that there is a market and will be a market for .mobi templates.

I am very surprised that all the bigger established template sites don't have .mobi (or .mobile for that matter) templates for sale. I emailed some of them several months ago and the responses I received stated that they were not planning on it. I think some of those responses will be revised as the mobile web space build out.

Best of luck if you do invest your time and resources in starting that .Mobi template designing firm. It's nice to see a change of heart and implied admission that there IS a future in dot mobi. Welcome into the light from the edge of the dark side. :tu:

Hey Ty, how are you with unique logo design ... and are you proficient (have you readily made sites for yourself) at Mobi SiteGaloreโ„ข for instance IYHO's? :gl:

Not only is that free site your potential competition, to varying degrees, but also there are likely many who would rather go to one source for logos / cool templates / and customizations above what is offered at MSG, IMHO. Be sure to thoroughly research any potential conflicts here - such as template licenses, expirations, and transfer rights, etc. as mentioned above, as well. :gl:

All the best!

Your suggestions are very impressive. I think if someone is agreed to pay higher then he should have resell rights. On the other hand someone should get a template in a cheap proce if he would haven't right to sell it.

I understand many of the comments concerning the mechanics of pricing and they all should be considered as well. I just think that you should use the "Magic Price" that is used by more than 6 million companies worldwide. That magic price is: "$19.95". If you can make the business model work, the pricing for the templates should go well for you and it is something that everyone knows and understands. :)
