I have seen some domain sellers selling domains for as less as 2$ where as some have been selling it for as high as 12 to 18 $ per year. But what actually is the price of a real .com , .net or .org domains. How much does Internic charges this registrars for a top level domains.

The cost to the registrar is $6.25 for .COM and $4.25 for .NET, both charged by Verisign GRS and including ICANN fees.

I believe the price for .INFO is $1.00, though I'm not 100% on that. I'm also unsure the exact price of .US and .ORG. I'll see if I can find out, or maybe someone who knows for certain can post here.

Exactly Spot on -RJ- for .info
No idea on .org and .US though I think it is similiar to .com & .net fee

I think you're right on the $1.00 cost for .info...

I register 500 .info names at registerfly for $1.25 each.

I found the price on those two other TLD's. Neustar charges registrars $5.50 per .US registration and PIR charges registrars $6 per .ORG registration.

Why there is so difference in price of domain with different domain sellers. If the domain is maintained by company then it should have uniformity in its price . How could one seller selle it at 2$ whereas other for 18$

i am really confused regarding this

It shouldn't be confusing. It is simply a business or marketing decision of each registrar. There's no set price that people have to charge, so each company can decide how much they sell registrations for.

Register.com charges $30+ for a .COM domain registration because they a certain type of customer. GoDaddy was one of the first to start charging under $10 for a .COM registration because they are going for a larger customer base with a smaller profit margin on each purchase. Some companies have even sold domains at a loss to gain customers for their other services.

I THOUGHT ICANN JUST Chareged registers a 25 cent fee. That mean syahho domains and 1and1 are losing money if they are 6.25

I would have thought that the mass registrars such as godaddy can negotiate the 'real' price due to the level of their business.

ICANN charges $.25 fee in addition to Verisign (the .COM registry) charge of $6. Yes, 1and1 is losing money (loss leading) on the registration cost because the $6.25 cost per domain does not take into consideration the setup fees involved with becoming a registrar.

Most people (not people in this forum) have only one or a few domains.
And most people use the same company for hosting.

1and1 get money on hosting, not on domains.

PS : in France, 1and1.fr have 10 years, and since more than a month they give 3 years of hosting (2GB space, 20GB traffic, 500 emails, perl/php/sql, ssh, ect... it's their best offer before dedicated server) and a .info for ... free.
It's something they should sell about 10€/month (360€ for 3 years).

And they made a lot of ad on all tech magazines.

1&1 strategy is apparently to get as many customers as they can, even if it cost a lot of money today.
