I see various coupons here and there from some registrars that make me wonder - how much are these guys getting the domains for?

Sure, I understand, their intent is to hook you in and grab you with the next years' costs, but still.

What is the cheapest that one can get domains for (i.e. gTLDs) as a reseller?

Verisign currently charges registrars $6.86/year for .COM domains and $4.23/year for .NET domains.

VeriSign Announces Increase in .Com/.Net Domain Name Fees from VeriSign, Inc.

Cheapest reliable .COM registration is GoDaddy with coupon code ($7.19), .NET is Dynadot Super Bulk Account ($5.75). Any registrar that charges less is losing money with an unsustainable business model.

They charge .net, .info for the same price as .com.

They make up on other extensions with much higher profit margins.

Dot Com sales -attract customers/accounts, make up on hosting services, other web services, and other extẽnsions non dot com.
