I just got a domain that is pretty long, but a .com. Would it be better to get a shorter name in maybe a .org or .us? I just want to see what others would say.

As above, though, if the name is easy to remember and searched for, that's all that matters. The are some 4 and 5 word exact search terms that are quite respectable. Resellers generally don't like them, but I assume you're talking about development.
Length is overrated as far as keywords go. For brandables normally the shorter and memorable the better.
However a domain like GetPaidToTakeSurveys.com is 21 characters and 5 words long. However there are actually 8K+ exact searches, 64 PPC Sponsors paying $2.33 - $3.20 per click.
So in general the term matters much more than the length for keywords.
length is really important for any domain name. If you got such a long domain name then it may not be worth using it but if you got a short domain name with .org, .net or .biz then it might worth using it.
