When Is Long TOO Long?

I usually avoid going beyond 12 letters, but I do own a very long domain, FantasyFootballThrows.com I sure gave it a lot of thought before buying because this is a whooping 21 letters. I have fffanatic.com but unless it is commonly understood that "FF" is short for fantasy football, this can appear to be totally wack.

I would like some input on what you guys think to is too long in terms of resell value.

Thanks

True, content is better. But if I don't plan on developing it then content would be irrelevant wouldn't it. I guess I just need to know at what point do you think an end user is turned off by a long domain? Is 21 letters a great turn off to most? When is long too long?

So then length is not an issue then I guess. However, I decided to put it up on Ebay for $12. Gonna try and get my reg fee back. LOL. I do hear what you're saying. I just decided that I don't want to keep it. Thanks for your input.

A good domain name is not only brief but also easy to remember, and I think this domain is relatively easy to resell.

I must say that I am encouraged. At first, I thought...hmmm. But then I ran across a thread were people were bidding to get this long domain name...AffordableHealthcareSolutions.com This one has 29 letters. Yet, it is a good domain name. They are getting rid of it though. Is it because it's so long? Who knows.

In my opinion, it is relative to the quality of the keywords and also your goals (brandable vs keyword).

Its way to long. You loose a lot of visitors through Typos :)

The length of a domain is irrelevant as long as it makes sense. By that rule, your name, FantasyFootballThrows.com, is about 6 characters too long. It makes no sense. Why did you register it? It doesn't compare to AffordableHealthcareSolutions.com, which does make sense and could possibly be sold to an end user.

Point well made and I agree. But then few guys are actually misspelling fantasy and they're certainly not misspelling football either. Over 5 million each month are typing it in correctly. But because this phrase is so long, there is no telling how many are mistyping. I have another domain that's relative to fantasy football, but I left off spelling out fantasy football and simply place two "F" in front of fanatic...FFFANATIC.COM

Cobo said that it should be easy to resell, so I've put it up for sale on Ebay. The bidding point is just $12 with a buy now option of $14.95:]

Domainace put it very well.

The thing that makes that name too long isn't the first two words or the number of characters - it's that the 3rd word is kind of a useless appendage.

But good luck with eBay!

I appreciate your opinion. However, some of the others seem to think it IS relevant whether it makes sense or not. I have to agree with them on this. Therefore, I am doing some house cleaning. I really don't want any domains in my folder that are more than 15 characters whether they make sense or not. This is just my personal preference.

"By that rule, your name, FantasyFootballThrows.com, is about 6 characters too long. It makes no sense. Why did you register it?"

I don't know which football is played in Japan, but here in America, there is much discussion around the performance of quarterbacks in throwing the ball. Fantasy football quarterbacks are judged on how well they "throw" the ball. Football throws are a popular discussion in my house, almost on a daily basis. So I thought that this domain would be a good discussion point for a blog, on the performance of fantasy football quarterbacks.

Oh, I wasn't comparing it to mine in that regard at all. That is a very good domain name. I have already stressed this. Maybe you missed my earlier post. Anyway, I simply used this as an example of a very long domain, much longer than mine even. Just as I am attempting to unload mine, he is doing exactly the same. After reviewing all of the responses here, it is my opinion that it doesn't matter if the domain makes sense or not. If people are going to be mistyping it due to it's length this is going to create issues. BUT (As Bazz has enlightened me on), if the content is real good, this will help to compensate somewhat for the long length. Bazz's stand is similar to yours in that they don't believe short is always better. The focus is on content. Yet, I still choose to straddle the fence on this somewhat because while content is indeed a heavy factor in the success rate of websites, I can't help but believe that the length of the name is also a factor when it comes to visitors.
