In my opinion, on average the longest a 'Good' domain can be is within 15 to 17 characters. Any longer than that, then it's just useless and should be given away at a retirement home.

I use the "17" character length number when sorting through various lists. Then do a keyword analysis within he remaining list.

Let's not be 'Captian Obvious' and mention that the shorter a domain is the better, that keywords are important, or that the sky is blue...

On average, what is the longest a domain could potentially be before it has absolutely no value.

While I´m not fixed on a specific limit, looking at some good 3 word domains your numbers above seem to give a useful ball park.

Some keywords are just long. I am not that concerned about length when it comes to exact keyword match.

shitforbrainsdamnlongdomainname.com might be good.
MIGHT be good in some specific cases
1. You know its exactly what someone is looking for (drFirstLastnamesClinicForPsychiatricConditions.com for instance)
2. Its a long but very catchy phrase or a long exact match keyword string with no obvious abreviation (UnlimitedWebsitesPerHostingPlan.com or ThisYearsTopFashionTrendsinCountry.com for instance)
3. Has good traffic for whatever reason.

f a domain name has more than 17 characters but the exact search gets a lot of traffic it is worth a good amount of money. There are several long tail keywords that may be 20 or 30 characters long but can pull in thousands of visitors on an exact search.

But if that is not the case then a long domains don't make sense. It's all about traffic when it comes to the length of domains.

HEllo Buddy,

Its depend on you,

Best,,,,answer....ever! :)

Seriously tho, if we HAVE TO stick to long domains only, I can advice to look not only for specific length, but also pronouncability. There is a little something called "the radio test" - if the domain can be easily recognized only from hearing it, without a need for further explanations (mostly valid for domains with dashes/numbers) then it should be fine. Shorter or longer you always want the name to be easily remembered, so avoid cluster of consonants, strange abbreviations, the forementioned symbols and numbers etc. I do believe that there are still many shorter domains of some value that aren't yet registered, but as most of them are, I fully believe that optimization for long-tail keywords will become more and more a common occurance.

Thinking as a user and not as a domainer, There are low chances someone type the long keyword on the url and then write a .NET or .COM. I'd rather go to a search engine and type "new york real estate brokers" instead newyorkrealestatebrokers.com on the URL. For me long, unpronounceable and non memorable domains are all in the same bag and can only be taken out of that bag with the magic of the SEO.

There is one reason which speaks for long generic keyword domain names as long as these make sense and reflect a business..
the authority effect of being the business which can be found at Miningsolutions . com, Salessystems .com or GlobalHealthPlans .com instead of DeltaMiningcompany .com, SalessystemsFlorida .com or GlobalHealthPlansInc .com

To the insightful well thought out meaningful posts, thanks.

To the 'smartass' repliers, What did I say?

I Specifically said; "Let's not be 'Captian Obvious' and mention that the shorter a domain is the better,or that keywords are important, or that the sky is blue... "

You must have missed that in your attempt to troll.

Oh keywords are important? Gtfo, I didn't know that!!! ;)

I own PetrochemicalEngineering.com, so clearly I 'get it'. But I sort those domains by exact search metrics when I buy them.

However if I'm going through the zone file or a pending delete list, I usually drop any domains under 17 characters in order to have a reasonable result list to match against 5k keywords.
