One of the most difficult aspects of domaining is acquiring the ability to distinguish between good and bad domains.

This is especially challenging for newbies, but also represents a problem for many who have been doing this for years.

This poll focuses on how you rate your ability to distinguish good from bad. Feel free to comment.

I am ok, I guess. It is my spending budget that limits me from buying the very top notch names O_o :bookworm:

    I acquired ReputationManagement dot co.

Some Namepros said it was worthless because of the length and extension.

It sold at NamesCon for 2k effortlessly.

The customer decides it is a good domain - when they buy it.

Identifying GREAT names is easy; things get more complicated when we have to cherry pick domains from a huge drop list or a closeout.

    Yes.

And after a few years you will be able to know if you are a good, mediocre or even bad domainer. Simply based on the profit you're making. Some sales might be more or less "lucky", but in the long run, it is the skills (which will result in profit) that matter.

I started a few months back and it might appear that I'm good at identifying domains as like 8 out of 10 times my domains were picked up by mods to promote at the promotion ticker/display sitting at the top of the forum.
Even both of my current auctions (in my signature) are selected for this week.
However, even though the mods approve, it still doesn't guarantee that all of these will sell for good every time so a lot of factors play their part in the game.

If you ask for an appraisal, take it for what it is, a personal opinion. Anyone that holds a name needs to have an idea of it's value themselves.

An appraisal is basically "I like this name, what do you think?" No one is right or wrong as it's just opinion.

If I try to appraise a name, I think as an end user and how much I'd be willing to pay in that respect if I wanted it.

Yeah, I am really good at identifying good domains. I hand register 4 word .net domains that nobody has thought of. :)
