How does it work?

I am interested in a domain that I know expires soon. It isn't of general interest (IMHO) but it would be handy to have it as a second domain as it is an alternative spelling to a domain I already own.

The owner of the site hasn't done anything with it since they registered it 2 years ago, and are leaving it a bit close to re register (tommorrow).

How long will it be before I can register the domain through usual channels (providing they don't re-register it soon)?

Expiry date + 35-45 days 'Hold"(depending on registrar) + 30 days "redemption" + 6 days "pending delete. ALmost 3 months. The owner can renew at any time until "pending delete" period starts. Renewal costs are usually the same as normal during "Hold" period, then are highly inflated during "Redemption" period.

Many owners(resellers, speculators) wait until near the end of "Hold" period to renew. Just economics. If a name goes into 'Redemption" the chances of it deleteing are greatly increased even though "redemption" is 30 days long.

Example: My most recent aquisition, expired on March 17th and deleted(dropped) on May 31st.

Thanks for the information, they registered the name on the date though. At least it was only an alternative domain name, not something I had my heart set on.
