I always wondered u know.. when ever I went to search for something in any Forum, It asked me to register first. I was wondering how they'd benefit from it? Anybody has any Idea?
Thx.

Each time you search, sql queries are run, and some index'es are save'd in its sql tables (to help future searches, i think)
(something like that.....)
the most value for a forum is its contents. You can not post content if you don't register. If I allow unregistered user to post, then I will get a lot of spam.
Yeah U can definitely avoid spam and Abuse by asking people to register and if someone spams, we can delete his account Thx guys for the replies. Wondering if there is any other profit too doing so.
from the economic point , the more registered users a forum has , the better it can negotiate for deals with advertisers ... since registered users are considered as a "certified" audience that possibly returns again and again ...
similarly , the more subscribers a magazine has , the higher the ad prices for the mag are going to be (possible reach to a bigger audience) ...
that's also why you sometimes see mags selling subscriptions at 50% , 60% or 70% off the cover price ... together with skipping all the middlemen costs (distributors , news agenta , etc) ... with the larger subscriber database , they also get the benefit of better negotiations with advertisers for higher ad prices ... eg. "saying our magazine has 100,000 , 1,000,000 subscribers , etc" and therefore high circulation (and also higher guaranteed circulation) and therefore ... more possible viewers of the ad
lastly , in the case of big companies/corporations , a big customer database is an asset (and quite valuable actually) which might raise the value of the company in a merger or an acquisition ...
