How do you think when you buy a domain name?

With a new technology such as RFID coming on strong, there seems to be a lot of playing field for new domain names. To pre determine possible business names in this new technology would not infringe on TM rights since the names currently do not exist.

(e.g.) If I read an article that said “in the rfid industry there will be a great need for user consulting and the implementation of rfid within a corporation, in the future 1000’s of consulting firms will be needed to meet that demand”

I could assume that the name “rfidconsultants” might be a name a company would want to own or have pointed to their web site. So logically to buy the name “rfidconsulting.com” or “rfidconsultants.com” would seem to be a good choice and in demand at some point. Also to buy both .COM and .NET, a stronger sales market in the domains names could be achieved by offering a corporation both names as a stronger market advantage for them and higher domain sale for myself.

One last thought….

I think a domain name that a company may want as a pointer to a web site is as important as a business domain name. Say a Federal Law was imposed that ammunition manufactures were required to make ammunition for guns with embedded RFID chips. Then a simple name such as rfidbullets.com may generate thousands of hits to that site. That name would be worth a lot of money to the manufacturer that owned it.

Any comments on this theory would be appreciated.

Your theory is going in the right direction, but you could invest a lot of money in all the possible combinations, TLD's, pluralizations, etc. It's also likely that the top 100 RFID names are already taken two years ago. Even it this is only an example, often a new technology has one name in development and another when finally released or adopted. Think of how many people registered "3G" names 3-4 years ago, which is still to come and will probably have a less generic name.

I'd first stick ONLY with .com names, and only then get .info or .net if the .com is developed already. Similar product names with "supply", "engineer", "consulting", and very generic terms will probably sell. Highly targeted names like RFIDbullets are probably a long shot with 1 in 100 ever selling since they would have fewer potential buyers. Things like RFIDpallets, or RFIDboxes would be more likely to sell since they cover many industries.

I think this is a good idea... as long as you think the future market will accomodate companies whose sole or core purpose is to provide RFID technologies and solutions. If that is THE business that they're in, then the demand for RFID domains should be there.

Check RFIDjournal.com

And I do agree... go with the dotcoms only... or at least as your core.

AdoptableDomains and IdahoFarmer......

Thanks for the input and the positive reflection on the way I think too. I do and will continue to read the rfidjournal and keep track of the rfid breaking news when new technology is introduced.
