Ok, so you've picked up some domains and want to park them.

How do you go about getting your traffic? Do you submit the domains to search engines or directories? Do you pay a company to do that for you? Do you do link exchanges? You get the idea.

I'd like to hear how those of you who have been successful at building a domain biz go about getting traffic to your domains.

Thanks!

I don't try to get traffic to parked domains. I park domains that already have traffic.

I try to get traffic to actual websites.
here's a great blog about all kinds of aspects incl search engines and link building. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/

Thanks NC.

I assume that you take steps to keep the traffic you get and to increase it?

You do not take steps to get traffic to your parked names. You get traffic if your names specify a certain search term. You also get traffic by people directly typing in the name you have parked.

If you want to drive traffic to names, you do not want to park them, you will want to develope them into websites, then it is ok to drive traffic to the website.

If you park your name, the best way to get traffic is pick out the best keywords and enhance the look of the parked page if you can by picking the right template and color scheme and making sure you have revelent keywords.

Thats about all you can do.

So you don't think PR or backlinks makes a difference for parked domains?

don't see how pagerank matters for a parked domain, but backlinks might if they generate traffic.

Shockie,

Is it OK for parked domain with backlinks ?, doesn't violates with their TOS ?

generally it doesn't, but it depends on your parking company, so you have to read their terms to be sure.

hmm, why would a parking company be upset if you had links to your parked domain? I would think they would benefit from the increase in traffic.

As for PR I've been led to believe the google changes your search results based upon the PR. So a higher PR site will show up higher in the search results.

I get about 30% of my traffic from search results and the rest from direct type in so I would assume that helping increase my search results would be beneficial.

mbuna,

it only matters what the parking compnay thinks, not what we think.

The parking company wants traffic coming to the park pages only by legit means. So if you are trying to "push traffic to it thru links you will probably get banned. The reason?

They want QUALITY visitors, not visitors that are pushed to the pages by links, paying for visitors or any other means. They want that quality traffic because the advertisers demand it.

I guess I have a different idea of a back link. I simply mean a link to your site on other sites.

Not anything that is paying for traffic, or driving traffic through any unethical means.

Many parking co's pages are basically invisible to SE's b/c they don't pick up ads in the SERPs.

Parking companies want targeted traffic and clicks since advertisers are paying with the hopes of results (sales) not visitors to their sites. The best parked sites generate traffic primarily from type-ins which most fresh hand registrations won't get. Back links are ok with some parking co's (for instance, if you picked up a name on a drop that used to be a developed site and it still had old links out there). But I don't know of any company that will allow you to promote your parked name in any way. Just read through the TOS and you'll get the picture.

Best way to get traffic to a new domain you just registered is to develop it out into a website and put up some adsense.

From Namedrive's TOS:

Traffic:
Traffic on domains parked with NameDrive can originate from two sources only: type in (direct navigation) traffic and existing search engine results / expired traffic. All other types of traffic including bought traffic, traffic driven by PPC campaigns, traffic directed from hyperlinks are not permitted. If your traffic originates from any sources other than type-in and search engine traffic, it must first be cleared with NameDrive LLC.

Regular checks are carried out and NameDrive LLC reserves the right to suspend any domain from parking if the traffic on that domain is believed to be bought, generated or redirected in any way that contravenes these terms and conditions. Users may periodically view their parked pages to ensure they are correctly set up but are not permitted to click any of the advertising links.

The best thing you can so is develop a small site with some small but usefull things on it.

Then get a lot of back links, ppl see it and keep in mind that your site has these usefull tools.

Then park it, the ppl come back, on your parked page.

yet the advertisers will take the backlink-generated converted lead's money all the way to the bank and not whine about it...
