Here is what I use.

Google without the .com
Google Value = 272,000
Google Ad Count = 1,
Google Suggest = (nothing in this case)

Overture Value System
Site Value = unclesam.com
TypeIn in value = unclesam
Word value = uncle sam

The age of the domain

The current registrar

The DNS Value BEFORE the drop

and last and not least...

My Eyes

Lots of my past failures to guide me.

How about everyone else?

Well, I use to use Overture, but since that system has been dead for several months, the tool is useless now. It still works, but for US it shows data from Jan.

Here is what I use.....

My Gut
Google returns with the " " other way does not matter
Domain Age
Archive (wayback.org)
Links (MarketLeap.com)
Dictionary, which is on google.
www.NameBio.com to check sales for the Keyword
Almost forgot the most important which can really drive up the price.
http://rankingcheck.com/ check keywords for a domain to see SEO rankings.

Google Search Results: 100,000 +
# of Advertisers for term: 1+
Age: 5 Years +
Available TLDs: (.net, .org, .info taken)
# of Potential End Users: 10+
Sales Comparables (See Sig!)
Brandable: (is that a name that a business could use)
TMs: 0

These are my primary factors... I also like to slit them into a few appraisal/scoring systems to see how they check out.

For a more automated and effective approach to dig for SERP positions a website/domain has, i would suggest SEO DIGGER which is a pretty nifty tool to do this job for you.

It also reports Wordtracker and Overture results for the phrase that holds the indicated SERP position.

I would add to that archive.org.

Next to all of the above I think your gut feeling and experience is most important. And do not be scared to risk something to reap potential benefits. :$:

I look at PageRank, Alexa Rank, value (through my domain appraisal software), the current social value of the term - among other factors (which I won't disclose! :p).

I personally go with gut feeling. I mean, most of us here are "professionals" and I know that is subjective. So at the end of the day, depending on what niche you're in.... you KNOW which one will work well for you. We all obviously research the basics, overture, google, etc etc.... but the gut is better then most of those results.... because it can calculate trend and a software can not.

I see a few people mention LINKS, which I have NEVER thought about or looked at in buying a domain.

Reason: The value of the links are low, UNLESS there is a real website behind them.

When people offer me domains, they say it gets X traffic, and makes Y. Only problem is, it is based off of a OLD site with links, sometimes Porn more times just a old site that got some decent traffic.

As a buyer, I can't buy that, won't buy it.

I just buy good keywords, that get some traffic and people search for that exact phrase in the exact order.

Do you value the domains you buy in the aftermarket (not snap) based on a multiple of the income or just because of the good keywords ?

Also, do you sell any of the names you buy in the drops ?

Thanks

I need the domain to get some traffic, and if it is a lot of money, I like to see some money to help justify that is viable.

grandma loves her grandchildren

May get 1 million visitors per month, and it will probably make only $10 a month so the visitors don't go there looking to buy something, so it isn't worth a premium.

2nd answer:
My domains no, I do not sell.

e.g. WineList.com, UncleSam.com Not for Sale.
