How do you check if you have a good domain name?

basically I want to know what you guys do to check to know the value of your domain.I usually run it through estibot, check the google search results for exact and broad search , check again through wordtracker, usually I get a couple of domains read them out loud to the godaddy employees ask their opinions of what they sound like also ask nameproers appraisal after purchasing and then after parking the domain I put it through premium domain free domain appraisal process which I believe is similar to the $14.95 appraisals that moniker and godaddy do which is done by some sort script and after this I believe I should get it hand appraisaled. so tell me and the rest of the forum what do you guys do to make sure you choose and bought a good domain

If a domain gets type in traffic, it is good.

First, dont pay for appraisals. They are never worth it - even their hand appraisals. Those people are out of touch and biased. They have incentive to make you believe your domain has value.

Secondly - your best bet is to find someone whos opinion you trust in this field. Shoot them over a pm, email, or messenger and get their input.

My focus when it comes to domain names is their possible commercial use. (this is priority number one) Could someone use this name? Would they want to? Also - dont forget to check domain comp sales - its always a nice way to see what domains are selling for with similar or the same keywords.

Thanks guys but do you use any specified tools to pick out semi good domains. so you just want waste an expert in the field time.

i think you have a pretty good list there. for LLLLs etc there are great tools like 4letternoob's estimate. namehugger has some other tools in the past domain sales section.

i'd reiterate the point about past sales especially, too. i try to find a similar name on namebio/ dnsaleprice, and double check by thinking "if i could have either of these names, which would i take?" if it's 50-50 between them (and there's no obvious reason the sold name went for a higher price) i take it as a rough guestimate. then i go a bit more conservative and think it's worth about half that (the rest is a bonus or from holding/ developing a name).

if it's a new extension or trend, and no past sales, i see on my list which name keeps calling out for development. even if it's a brandable name, or field i'm not interested in - if it keeps peeps out at me that i should do something with it then it's obviously worth keeping.

Best place to start I would say is Estibot.

You can try it for FREE. Which is not bad, but you can get a lot more out of it as a paid member.

Of course no appraisal (free or paid) can be entirely accurate. These are just estimates to use as a starting point.

But its nice to know where to start at least...

If you're a newbie to domaining, you can reg at a place like Dynadot then ask for appraisals here on NP, if no good, drop it within 5 days of registering it & get a credit back to your account. That would be a good way of knowing if you're name is any good or not.
