How did this site (3d2.com) grow in popularity overnight?

This website (3d2.com) was registered in 1997 and until two weeks ago it appeared to be pretty much dormant. Now it’s on Alexa’s homepage as one of the Movers and Shakers but even if you type "3d2" into Google it only checks in as the fifth result. I can’t find any mention of the site in Google news, so it doesn’t seem like they’ve had a marketing rush recently, which bags the question “how did they become so popular, so fast?”

I've seen the same thing happen with sites using referer spam, maybe that's what they're doing.

I don't know for sure, but it's quite easy to boost your Alexa rank using referer spam
(FYI I haven't done it myself but I am on the receiving end)
