Hi to all members of this forum. I am quite new in selling Domains, but i have been always up to date with the informations and stuff. I own around 50-60 domains, which i think i am not going to get profit immediately, but let's say that in the coming years(5-10 years) maybe half of them will be a good investment. I tried to think a bit in the future, and bought some domains in the field of technology or shops, online shops, or online trading etc.

The question is, do you plan your portfolios in selling as soon as possible, or you buy domains thinking in long term. And if you thing in long term, what are your best ideas, what can be worth buying now, that can make value in 2025?

Best wishes

Most people tell new people to buy registered domains from drops/auction. That is fine advice, but it is very general. Firstly you have to expect the market to always increase. It will, generally speaking, but like anything there are wildcards. The new gtlds really could deflate the .COM! Just as well, Gtld might never take off! On top of that, you still need to actually pick a desirable name to profit from! Newbie are likely to make this an emotional 'shot in the dark'. Regardless of trend, there are many variable you can lose on. Finally, you are going to spend more money investing in these names vs hand-reg.

I think you are on a good track. If you are truly creative, have good foresight and patience, hand-reg can work great. I do agree online shops will become bigger business, and IMO, the key is great generic names. I believe in investing in a niche, and don't move too far beyond it until you are certain you own most of the available names that could compete with the ones you DO have. I can go into a lot of detail, beyond, but it just common sense, smash the competition before they can exist more than it already is.

I think it depends mainly from the budget. Investing in a niche makes you buy more and more, and there are a lot's of combinations which is a bit crazy to spend all of this money in order to block domains you can't predict. But it is also true that the more you buy, the more your probabilities grow. I think that the market will still expand in the next 10 years in different fields, just like it has expand in this last 10 years. They need to keep the World rolling, you know. There are hundreds of domains down there wich can make us earn a lot of money. We just need to read the newspaper everyday, stay up to date. Personally, buying withought the pressure that i need to sell for buying other ones, having a fixed budget, makes me see the things a bit more clearly. I think that every extension will be kinda of .com in the future. Coz that's the way it functions. Every country, it's developing their market, and the market itself will developing their ways of doing business and so on.

Every TLD is already a kinda gateway to an IP address. I see this continuing on for the foreseeable future. By which I mean I don't see any alternative competitors to how a domain name functions. If there are? I'd appreciate being enlightened :)

Generally speaking, crap domains don't become good domains later. Good domains will still be good domains tomorrow or in the next 10 years. Their value will appreciate. There are exceptions of course:
  • time-sensitive domains eg technology-related: diskette.com is going to be worth less and less. => Don't invest in fads or technology that will be soon obsolete.
  • new trends and products can emerge, presently-unknown, made-up words/brands can become buzzword in the future. => good potential for brandable domains but you need to understand what you're doing.
  • predictive domaining: anticipating future trends, or being the first to take bets on upcoming trends as they shape up. Example: drone technology, wearable, environment-friendly tech, sustainable development, well-being.
But the overall idea is that good domains are those that are already valuable in the present. Example: LLL.com. So my suggestion is don't overdo it. Use common sense, look at what works today. Buy something that leaves a healthy margin for resale. Domain names that already valuable today are simply more liquid too.

I think there are still good opportunities in some ccTLDs too, but these are specialized markets and they need to be approached with a good understanding of local conditions. Dotcom lenses are blinders when applied to ccTLDs.
