I was just wondering what the general feeling was by domainers of the large auction houses and main registrars. Do you feel they are trustworthy? Are they only out for themselves or do they have your best interests in mind? Do you feel safe operating in this industry? Are there way more shill bidders than anyone thought? Is it a breeding ground for scammers?

Will be interesting to see what the general feeling is amongst you guys.

    Hi

    what diff does it make?

either you participate or you don't

when the scams hit the fan, they get exposed

then we move on or we move out

if you can't be trusted, you won't survive

    imo....

I guess the difference is in how you participate in domaining. Someone like yourself might be able to act relatively independent of other platforms (i.e if you have your own marketplace or mainly do private deals), where as some people only buy and sell through auction sites in which case trust is a must. In a perfect world reputation would be everything but in reality it's not (although it's much more relevant when operating as an individual as opposed to a larger business). I'm sure some marketplaces have been highly suspected of shady goings on but are still going strong.

Problem I have with marketplaces is...

Direct your domains to domainnamesales/uniregistry and their objective is to make a sale whether that is your domain, another domainer's domain, one of their own domains or one of their new extensions

Direct your domains to sedo and the page says to insert your email so now once again the traffic from your domains builds their end user database for free and they will pitch your domain or somebody else's

    etc...

Take a lead direct with your own sales pages, bodis sales pages, efty etc... and now you can market only your portfolio to buyers, send your traffic away and you are building someone else's end user database for free and who knows how many offers you don't receive because they were redirected to other opportunities

So hard to trust someone when their goal is to get a sale and they have the whole database of domains to achieve that with including possibly their own portfolio, so hard for them to have your best interests in mind and a conflict of interest, reason I've built my own end user database for many years as my traffic isn't going to build the next man's profits

    Hi

nobody should "only" buy or sell thru auction sites.

    it limits your scope.

still, there have been instances in the past, where a particular "auction platforms' employee" was accused of some "shady" bidding which affected the process.

in that case, those who participated in auctions with that individual, where refunded some of their money.

i was a participant as well, so the concerns are understandable.

like i said before, some moved on and still use it, while some moved out.

    imo...

I think the trend nowadays is to use parking services with a free contact form to solicit offers, such as Bodis or ParkingCrew.

Even better, you can set up a custom landing page on your server. Here is the one I have recently created for my domains. If there is interest, I'm considering releasing a copy of the source code for everybody to use.

Best of all, no sales commissions when you sell privately.
Just escrow, or PayPal fees for smaller amounts.

    Love it haha
I agree this is definatley the way forward. Swap those listing fees for hosting and save money. It would be interesting to know how many sales are made through direct traffic and how many are through searches on a listings site.

    To quote some scripture...

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

I released the domain sales page script I was talking about earlier.
Got a couple PMs from members interested in it, so figured I'd post it back in this thread.
Give me a shout if you have any questions. ;)
