What's the process of copyrighting something? Costs? What if:

Someone has a profitable domain/site and I copyright or tm before them?

You could try copyright something that was made by someone else all you want but you wouldn't get anywhere enforcing it. To copyright something you do not have to go through the patent office. As soon as something is made it is effectively copyrighted, all going through the patent office does is prove when it was copyrighted and adds more credence to the copyright. If they can prove they had and were using what you copyrighted before you were using it then it would be thrown straight out of court.

As far as I am aware... Copyrighting only covers creative works, such as words, images, movies, etc... Patents are for ideas. You can't copyright an idea.

As far as trying to steal a domain by acquiring a TM before them, well thats just low and I doubt it would work unless you can prove that you used the name in commerce prior to them. Even then, they may be able to use it, because TMs only cover specific categories.

A copyright is established and the time it is published, not when it is made; otherwise I will claim many works were stolen from me lol.

In the future, if there is something you want copyrighted, send yourself 2 certified with return receipt packages... when you receive it, DO NOT OPEN IT!!!! This is the poor mans copyright trick. (just sending first class mail will work to becuase it is dated stamped, with certified, there is a record fo the mailing and the retrun receipt just give evidence of recept of the mailing.
