Help Needed: First time preparing image for print

Hi everyone,

I received a PDF with instructions on how to prepare my ad. There were a few terms I would love clarification on. The pdf can be found here if needed: revolustream.com/Coast_Soc_Spec.pdf

I am not familiar with the term "proof" (match, rainbow, iris). I am hoping some clarification can be offered to help me determine what this is referring to.

Also, when looking at the ad dimensions, I see 3 different measurements for Full Page. Am I correct to assume I should create the image at the Full Page Bleed size, with the understanding that it will be trimmed to the Full Page Trim size? I am confused over the Full Page Non-bleed size.

I never heard of (Match, Rainbow, Iris,)UNless there talking about pantone, which you dont need if its a full color ad). and have been in the printing field for over 10 years.

Anyway, The difference with a non bleed size is that it will have a white border around it or what ever color the backround book is. It is smaller because it doesnt run off the page (and leaves space around the ad). A full bleed usualy has a .25 bleed extra on it. Also note that there is a safe area (so if you choose to go with the full bleed) make sure you dont have any text close to the (trim size) which is where it gets trimed (I usualy leave at least 1/3 of an inch for my words in the ad, so they dont get cut off)

Also make sure you design it in CMYK and embed all fonts, if not your fonts will be different. What I suualy do is just bring my ad into photoshop at 300 DPI and flatten the image. Or if you use Illustrator (create all text to outlines) If you use Quark and distil it as a {PDF) Make sure all fonts are embeded. Now if you have small text in it and flatten it with photoshop, you got to watch, but usualy it is ok, I dont want to worry you or confuse you.

your pdf url doesn't exist, however what you mention is pre-film test matches. Out of my head (I may miss one or two) those are. Plus I know them in Spanish so the name might be different:

* Print Plotters
* Iris
* Rainbow

and the post-film tests:

* Match Print
* Dry Proof
* Chromalin (no idea if that's the name in English)

of those you need, Iris is an inkjet proof, Rainbow is the best and most used, it's done via thermal sublimation. Match Print is a process done with plates and UV light for each color. Of course, they will look different and you need to match as close as possible, although the common procedure is that print shops do that for the client, I know the processes ad the howto but never had to do it myself in my whole life. Just a tip: Rainbow is the best but don't like Pantone conventions very much, so pay special attention to that and if the project is color sensitive (ie photos) then ask the printers what to do
