Help choosing a name!

I am consulting to a group of professionals who are launching a group practice and in need of a proper domain name. They are a for-profit LLC in a health-related field. They have a three-word name that is too long for their primary site (36 letters). The three-letter acronym is being used in .com, .net, and .org (not they could afford them anyway).

The last word of the name is "associates" and the first two words of the name are a common practice area, like "maternal health". The two-word combination is unavailable in .com, .net, and .org. I have attempted so far unsuccessfully to acquire one of these. However, failing that, here is the best of what's available using the the two keywords:

maternal-health.org
maternalhealth.pro
maternalhealth.ws

Here is what's available adding "LLC" to the acronym:

mhallc.org
mha-llc.com

Which of these options would you choose? I am leaning toward either maternalhealth.pro or mhallc.org.

If I had to choose one of those I'd go with mhallc.org.

I might also try another brainstorming session to come up with some new ideas!

It really depends weather they need an interent presence or would like their website to drive leads and sales, I would approach as follows:

If their full 36 character name is available, it should certainly be secured .com, regardless of length, if thats their name, it should be secured as soon as a domain search indicates its available.

It sounds like their name is generic in nature in which case their generic market and primary products or services should be throughly trawled for keywords.com

Make a shortlist of preferrable but unavaliable domains and type each into a browser to see whats currently published, or what they resolve to.

gilescoley - they are in the us but unfortunately all variations of the names I've searched have been gone in that extension.

I've never used .pro but was looking at it since the main two-word phrase w/no hyphen is available in that extension. What do people think of that extension for a professional group practice?

moped - I do have the full 36 letter name in dotcom and will use it to redirect any traffic it gets to the main site. I also have another dozen or so related keyword domains that came up in my research that I will redirect. But none of them would make good site names since they are more niche. For example, using "maternal health associates" as the name (it's not the name) I have things like "breast milk" and "maternal depression" etc.

But I just found another contender. The first word of the full name begins with 'i' like integrative. The second word is the main practice area, like psychiatry or optometry. So what about iPsychiatry.org (for example)? I think it's quite good and have reg'd it (was pleasantly surprised it was available). One partner in the practice wonders if it isn't "too trendy" with the 'i' in front. I think it works pretty well esp since the first word is an adjective that describes the practice area (like 'integrative psychiatry'). Thoughts?

I agree with Gradius on this point. You have to really consider your target for this domain/website.

Is the site to increase exposure and drive more sales to your business? If so, I'd go with something that is keyword/SEO driven while still easy enough to remember - no acronyms, if you must use a hyphen, keep it to a two keyword domain with a hyphen in between and in .COM.

Or are you building a site to point existing/potential clients to for more information and to handle appointments? If so, go with something that's easy to pronounce, spell, and remember - avoid hyphens, use easy to spell words, .COM/ORG preferred, acronyms are okay if it's just a few letters (MHA.org) or 1-2 easy keywords + a common acronym (MaternalHealthLLC.com), etc.

Thanks for all the input. The site will be used to point clients to and to point traffic to coming from more niche seo/keyword domains. It will be the public web face of the organization. It will also be used for each partners professional email address. So short, classy/professional, easy to spell/remember is what I'm after.

The first word of the name of the LLC begins with 'i'. I don't want to state the name for obvious reasons but we can use "International Cardiology Associates, LLC" as a good example. I have been brainstorming this name off and on for a couple months and have picked up a number of good seo/keyword domains - but none that would serve the purpose for the main site.

The domain either needs to be the acronym of the group name, the keywords of the name, or some combination thereof. I put the options I've come up with (granted not very good ones) out here partly with the hope that it might jar loose a better idea .. which I think it did.

Using the above name as an example (ie, "International Cardiology Associates, LLC"), I now have the equivalent of iCardiology.org. I think this is much better than the other options listed in the first post. The question is whether the 'i' makes the name too trendy for a respectable professional healthcare practice. They don't want to come across as though they're trying to be hip (god forbid). Thoughts on that would be much appreciated!
