When a German man scanned the QR code on a bottle of ketchup, he expected to land on a page about designing his own label. Instead, he was taken to a hardcore porn website.

Daniel Korell scanned the checked label to read about the promotion, but was directed to German porn site Fundorado.

The mix-up was down to the fact that Heinz ran the contest between 2012 and 2014, and the link expired this year

Lesson of the day....all marketing departments need to consider keeping domains registered until the product chain has been exhausted.

My 2 cents ;)

What marketing departments should do w/ QR codes is a register a domain for the purpose and use it as a redirect service. Then when the domain expires, all they have to do is change the redirect to point to a page that says `Sorry, that promotional has ended. Would you like to click on this affiliate link instead?'

was watching Conan (late night talk show) a few years ago, and he mentioned that NBC required his staff to register a domain name for ten years before they could use it in a comedy skit.

i think there is a simple solution for this problem: 10 year registrations cost just $100.

Not sure why they even bother using yearly renewals.

First of all, registrations are cheaper than they use to be per year. I believe it was $100 for two years when I registered my first domain (1997).

Secondly, the Internet should be a platform where anyone can run a site, and $100 may not seem like a lot to you but it is a lot to some people in the world.

If you are asking why a company like NBC uses yearly renewals, well yeah, they probably should reg for longer from the start.
