Shopify just posted a really interesting podcast regarding the acquisition of headphones.com and how it helped a company create a brand from day one. They also posted a full transcript which is a bit quicker to digest.

I find it particularly interesting that the domain pretty much made the business. They were unable to get manufactures and suppliers to deal with them until they purchased a super premium name. After the purchase, all they had to do is mention the name, and it was a done deal. This is certainly a good case study illustrating the value of a domain name.

Great Domain equals great business most time. Nothing speaks of credibility and dominance than a super premium domain.

This shows timing is everything. Interesting that they financed the domain.

Thanks for sharing.

It's only a matter of time before premier league players start buying premium very expensive domain names for investment for when they retire from football

How much did they pay? Couldn’t find in the podcast

They never mention an exact dollar figure in the podcast. The following quote sheds a little light on the price:

"Fast forward to four months. And we had spent the whole four months kind of going back and forth and negotiating and we made a deal for the domain. And it was very expensive, but I was able to get it tied to the business basically. So we were just paying for it monthly and then as the business grew, our payments would grow. And so yeah, that's how we got the domain and we did it without... he wanted over a million dollars for it and we obviously did not have a million dollars to give. So I'd say he was a very reasonable negotiator, and a really, really nice guy, and ended up connecting you with other great people in the industry and stuff. So that all worked out really, really well." - Andrew
