Have I been stung?

I booked a hyphenated .com domain ( photo-bank.com ) with Pool two weeks ago and with three days to go I also booked a snap with Snapnames.

Sadly Pool grabbed the name and it went to auction. It cost me $1600 to win the name and now 24 hours on, I can't help feel I've been stung.

I will be trading with photobank.co.uk ( I'm in the UK ) but liked the idea of owning a .com version should things grow.

Have I been stung or is $1600 a fair price?

dont know about stung but $1600 is a fairly high price. Would have expected to pay about that for the non-hyphenated version.

Why did you buy a dotcom name that didnt match your .co.uk??

Well why did you buy it ?
It seems that there were other intresstest in the domain that was willing to pay big bucks.

I think its a crazy price, but I dont now alot about "photo-bank" either.

I also own photo-bank.net/,org and .co.uk so the .com completed the pack BUT I'm not a big fan of hyphenated names.

photobank.com went on Pool last year for $2900

I bought it because I wanted the name but $1600 seems very steep for a hyphenated name.

Yeah I know, to be honest, I didn't buy the name to sell but that doesn't mean I'm happy to pay that kind of money for it. Pool seems to be shrowded in mystery, you're just a number and you could be bidding against anyone including Pool or the registrar that grabbed the name.

I wanted the name and I could afford it but with hindsight I'm having difficulty understanding how the name could have gone to $1600. I suppose I was wondering if Pool are seen as trustworthy and I was just unlucky and found a name that someone else wanted badly as well.

The fact that I booked a slot with Snapnames with two days to go is what made me wonder. The Snap is usually the first thing to go weeks in advance for a name that someone wants badly.

but there's no more option... rather bid or just leave it to your rival...

But if you really want the name then give your best shot and again...

There has been speculation as to the inner workings of pool this year. Seems to be some shadow bidding. In your case it is to late to look back now but for future reference I always select my "high" before an auction ever commences. Even if I am in "love" with the name I don't go higher than my initial price. On more than one occasion I have been beat by only $10 but I know human nature so if I would have kept bidding so might the other person.

I know, I'm just coming down from the adrenalin buzz that auctions give you. I set myself a limit of $750, then $1000 and then $1500 ... I sailed right through all three :yell:

Luckily Sterling is still quite strong against the Dollar, so I suppose it could have been worse.

I suppose the hyphenated .com might help with search engine keywording and positioning so in the long term, perhaps it will work out for the best.

But, you're right, I should have stuck to my limit and walked away, I kept thinking ... another $50 ...
