Hi,

I got an Email today with an offer of $750 for domain Canal1 (.tv)

For those who dont know Canal means 'Channel' in Spanish & French which makes this domain very useful & brandable in my opinion. There is a number of TV Stations around the world that use the name 'Canal 1' so i wouldnt be too surprised if it is one of they Channels who are wanting the .tv

The domain gets some traffic which i would assume is from people looking for the TV Channel websites as most of the Traffic comes from Equador where their is a large Tv Channel called 'Canal 1'

Traffic Stats for Canal1
January 2007 74
February 2007 139
March 2007 159
April 2007 153
May 2007 122
June 2007 171
July 2007 183
August 2007 150
September 2007 99

I will be rejecting the offer of $750 but what i would like to know from you guys if how much you feel this is worth AND also do you feel that most Tv companies will try and buy up the .tv of their Channel name??

I will give a Counter Offer in reply to this Email but as i feel this domain has so much potential then i doubt i will get the price i want yet so will be forced to hold on for a while yet (its standard reg fee so im happy to sit & wait)

In the UK already one of our main Tv Channels STV have bought STV.Tv and use that as their main domain but im not sure if this has happened worldwide so i would love to hear how it is in other Countries.

Please give me your views on this one, Thanks in advance.

Ronnie

My thoughts

Perhaps you should mask the domain by putting hyphens between the letters so that search engines [and hence potential buyers] are not able to know how much you were offered.

To be honest BigCat i am not bothered about potential buyers knowing what i was offered but i will edit my 1st post just to stop it getting into search engines.

Congrats on the offer.
Try to find out who sent you the offer (TV station/end-user or reseller).
If you think that you'll be good with one less .TV, counter the offer accordingly (end-user/reseller).

Best wishes :)

Just wanted to note that I've been getting a few offers from the UK, and very often they're bogus as my replys go unanswered.

Congrats on the offer.

I would hold the domain for $25 no way would I take $2500. Down the road if you think there will be wide use of .tv then it gets a XX,XXX offer IMO

My advice is: try to find out in which countries the "Canal1" exists. Based on that you can reject or not a $750 offer. Here in Mexico we haven´t had never a "Canal1".

IMHO this is a good name to make some fast money benfiting your cash flow, so you can buy a better one. That´s the way to climb the wall and get funds for a premium.

I will counter at $1500 and with a break point of $800.

Good luck on your negotiation!!

Yeah...I'm with vaunter. With $750 or $800 you should be able to shop around for an even better name. Good luck!

I sold one canal name for $200+ and this offer seems on track with what I sold mine for considering its channel 1! These type of names have inherent value IMO, but just how much is really yet to be seen. Myself personally, if it was on sedo I would push it into auction, if it were private I might say, I will accept $1000 or you can make a $750 offer on sedo for a push to auction allowing it to sell at current market value.

Hey,

My view is definetley closer to meek & Equity who said " Originally Posted by equity78I would hold the domain for $25 no way would I take $2500. Down the road if you think there will be wide use of .tv then it gets a XX,XXX offer IMO.

My personal situation is that i do not need the money at all & with this being standard Reg Fee then i can afford to hold this for as long as needed.

I am a little suprised so many of you guys would sell this for $700 - $1500 as i think this is a top quality domain that i wouldnt sell for anywhere near they prices.

Think of it this way, if i owned Channel1.tv then how much would that be worth? $xx,xxx - $xxx, xxx at a guess?
Obviously Channel1 is much better that Canal1 but they hold the same branding power to their market.

Well this is the 'Channel1' for the Spanish & French markets so any TV Comapny that is called Channel1 or would like to develop THE number one Online TV Channel to the Spanish, French markets then this would be one of the 1st domains they would look at.

I dont have time tonight for a lenghty research but i will try give more reasons in the morning when i have more time to research how many Canal1's their is.

I would love to hear from the guys who have been dealing with the Spanish .tv's as judging by some of the threads i have read then the Spanish .tv market is doing well. Could any of you guys give us your view on this domain.

Thanks again for any views given (even if i disagree with many :hehe: )

can always go down .......... harder to go up with a price, set your benchmark perhaps

:gn: Surely canal1.tv is the ideal .tv for a european tv company...

I would never sell for that price, just stick tight unless you really need the money now. Maybe in the future the european companys might start a bidding war because at the end of the day there can only ever be one canal1.tv

I would hold out for a higher offer if I were you. Definately a nice name you've got there

Hello again,

Just a wee update on this domain, I spoke with the potential buyer and after some negotiations the offer was raised to $2000 but im still not interested so i think that is the end of negotiations with this party.

I couldnt find out much about the buyer apart from the fact he/they were Spanish so no idea if it was one of the TV companies that use Canal 1.

I will try explain briefly why i rejected the offer:
With all my .tv's i plan holding for a minimum of 3 years so i judge my expectations on "How Much COULD this domain be worth in 3 years then take off the 3 years renewal fees to give me a figure"
Obviously its impossible to know exactly how much any domain will be worth in 3 years time especially in an extension like .tv that moves so fast but the important thing for me is that i dont sell too cheap as i am happy to sit & hold for years especially at standard reg fee.

I know many of you guys would say "Sell and buy another .tv at better value...." but thats not my style. I dont see myself as a domainer, dont want to spend everyday trying to buy, sell and work my way up the ladder. I bought a few of my .tv's to develop and the rest as Investments for the nest 3 - 5 years.

So it looks like Canal1.tv will be kept in Scotland for a while longer unless the buyer comes back at a later date, i am more than happy to hold this domain as i have great faith in it.

Cheers,

Ronnie
Please excuse the poor typing as i have been up to 3 in morning over last 2 nights playing Xbox360. Im not really a Gamer but my brother left his console here so a few of us got together for a 'Pro Evolution' Tournament and now i LOVE the Xbox360 so will be buying one soon. :sold:

I don't blame you for waiting one bit. The only reason we sell a domain "now" is because we need the money. If you don't need the money now, then waiting is the smart thing to do.I sold "UV.tv" for $4355 a few months back, only because I needed the money then. (we were on vacation in Hawaii!). I wish I could have had the money to reg it 5 years, and just wait! I am positive it would be worth in the future.
By the way, I own Canaltv.tv, and will wait with it.
Good move. That is the tough part about domaining, most of the time we don't know the buyer. Is he an individual paying the most he can, or a buyer for a huge corporation to which $10,000-$20,000 is nothing.

Ronnie, you're not alone in your way of thinking! I am looking at my better names as investments too, and am not terribly concerned to sell them right away. In fact, I don't want to sell right now, unless the offer was too good to refuse. I would say that your name will go for xx,xxx in the near future, and you would regret letting it go for so cheap. dotTV is only just now catching fire, so I would say hold for as long as you can for maximum ROI.
