IMHO, the only way to be 100% secure is not to use the internet at all :D

Once your site's online, theres nothing you can really do to prevent your site design being stolen.

Some measures you can take to prevent your site from being hacked ( again, not 100%)
- only use reputable hosts
- don't upload scripts unless you know exactly what the code does, or they come from very reputable sources
- keep the operating system, firewall, antivirus on your PC updated
- use long passwords ( e.g. 8+ symbols ) containing numbers, letters ( upper and lower case ) and special characters e.g. .-$!
- don't use the same username/password twice
- don't use pirated/cracked software
- find out how to secure your router, don't use wireless if it's just as easy to use a network cable. turn off your wireless when you're not using it.

I agree with -NC- as well, there's no 100% fool - proof to safeguard your sites and information on the internet, it's a public place open for abuse and assault.

First it needs to start with your surfing habit, use web proxy when doing it, don't post on newsgroups using your own computer use a cybercafe to do that and use a throwable email address such as sneakemail.com when doing it as well and don't check emails or any private information like online bank details using a cybercafe. make sure you have the updated/lates anti-virus and anti-spyware software on your computer, update their db also and make sure don't just insert a usb disk or cd on your computer without first scanning it for spyware and anti-virus, and also put winpatrol, firewall and anti-spyware/trojan on your computer. Don't surf porno sites as well.

Block all traffic from russia, china, romania, taiwan, iran, iraq, and turkey. That's a start. It's these countries that do the most damage.

Although this is 100% correct it does not cover you completely. If you install software ensure that you keep it 100% updated. Even the best of coders make mistakes and introduce bugs into a script which can then be exploited.

I use PeerGuardian to block incoming connections, be careful if you use torrents.

Here is a list of free stuff that I use

FireFox
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Then secure it, help found below

AdAware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Avast Antivirus
http://www.avast.com/

PeerGuardian

Any better software tips?

My background is from one of those countries - and I agree. I would add thailand and phillipenes to that list - but really its stupid to do so, cant block traffic. For my site www.SeatBeltPads.com which I essentially brought this product to the market, investing all my money and credit cards in doing so...

and for evey 10,000 visitors I get from China, phillipenes - 1 person buys and 9,999 of them decide to start thier own seat belt pads business making crappy unlicensed knock-offs LOL but what can you do, Boycott all of China?

1) Use good host.
2) Use scripts you know what they contain. Some people give out free scripts just to get access to the server files.
3) Even after using the good host and using good scripts. Lock your scripts to your domain name ;) This will create one more hurdle for the losers.
4) Keep strong passwords and memorize it. Don't write them down.
5) Don't make enemies on the internet.

Don't use a Windows server. Make sure yout host uses a fairly up-to-date Linux distribution. If you want to be really pendantic about stuff like that, make sure that they aren't running X or any other form of GUI management system, because they all have vulnerabilities.
