Hacked domain names - How much they are worth?

Hi everyone,

As the valuable .com's are almost all taken, I reoriented myself to hacked domain names (like blo.gs, etc). I even found some very interesting names, that are searched over 200.000 times a month (according to overture).
The problem is that I have quite a few money to invest (my monthly savings are about 30-40$), and I think if it is worth investing it in hacked domain names.
Even if I know this is not an appraisal thread, about how much would you think a site like gam.es or mortga.ge would be worth.
Thanks

IMO it is a dangerous strategy if you are looking to resell domains. Hacked domains are not that easy to sell, actually even decent .com domains may be hard to sell. The buyers are not always there when you want them to be.
You say that all valuable .com are taken, that's true at least for most of them. But there are still good domains to be grabbed. If you are on a tight budget look at the available domain lists posted here, some nice domains can be had for reg fee and look at the expired domain lists too.

Overture means nothing here, and you should not expect a lot of type-in traffic for a hacked domain, or traffic at all.

True, there have been a number of hacked domains selling well like blo.gs but sales are like that are the exception and not the norm. I would suggest that you stick to the TLDs that work, but do more research or find a niche in a market that you know and understand.

I jumped into hacks with both feet once upon a time, and am now waiting for my feet to grow back! Seriously, think twice... and then think again. Especially if you're flirting with expensive ccTLDs. My drugs of choice were .es & .be, and I'm pretty sure EuroDNS bought new leather furniture for their office once my VISA stopped smoking. If you want any of my gems, let me know as I let 99% of them drop about 2 weeks ago. Are hacks worthless? No way. But they ARE like any other domain that's not likely to get type-in traffic in that you will have to DEVELOP, DEVELOP, DEVELOP. That's what I intend to do with 3 that I actually decided to renew:

RedWin.es

WhiteWin.es

FineWin.es

as implied above, the worth of domain hacks are what enthusiasts are willing to pay for them. the number of potential buyers is quite small, but if you find the interested ones, you could sell for quite high. if you're still going to pursue the domain hacking strategy, might i suggest you consider the market, and realize that hacks like gam.es is more likely to sell than something like mortga.ge. :imho:

good luck!!

I'm all for "cool" domain hacks; web 2.0 crap that other people will like. More "professional" words in domain hacks seems like a dumb idea to me.

The only problem is that you have to use weird ccTLDs that might have a high reg fee.

interesting name, but who would want an email address at that domain?

Actually, the subdomain f.uckyou.com should be what's sold of that, because the buyer could make several [email protected] email addresses! :p

... there is nothing wrong with domain hacks as long as you have development plans or know what you are doing. But to build a domain portfolio just with domain hacks is not the way to go :imho:

I agree with this.
I have a few, including one I think could become really valuable- but only with some development.
And if you do plan to develop, do it ASAP- especially if your hacks are with ccTLDs with high annual fees.

Well, thanks for all your coments, they are really valuable for me. I decided to purchase a domain hack, and develop it seriously, and my intention was not to make a domain hack portofolio.

Oh btw, maybe some of you are interested touri.sm is still free, but the reg fee is quite big. And you must be EU citizen to register it, maybe some of you are interested.

Thaks, Alex
