Greetings fellow Domainers

What got me into domaining was when I bought a domain for $9 and quite by chance sold it for $4000 to a large company that infringed on my copyright by registering a hyphenated version of my domain, because they wanted the name so bad, so instead of getting all legal on them I just said they should make me an offer on the domain, this made me realise the value of this industry and that no other investment on Earth can generate as much returns on investment.

I am always hungry for knowledge and will always have alot to learn so any tips or advice you have would be much appreciated

All the best to you

I'm curious - did you have an actual TM? Because a copyright isn't enough to prevent them from using the hyphenated version. You likely would have lost (some countries will also support a long standing tradename without a registered TM, but that is not common, especially if you only had a website with the name). More than likely, they just wanted your domain and that is a reasonable price if they are set on their name.

None-the-less, welcome to domaining! And be ready to go through a lot more domains before you get that type of chance again. But more importantly, to reduce the number you need to go through, read read read and research for 6 months or so before buying more domains to resell. You will thank me later. :)

@svede thank you for your advice

No I did not have a TM but I did register it first and they registered the new subsidiary of the big company which had a new name after me and obviously saw my existing site when they tried to register my domain name but had to settle for the hyphenated name, knowing full well that their site would cause confusion with mine, which probably means that they were initially hoping to acquire it from me if they could.

Yup they really wanted the domain and I knew it and so did they, that is why I offered it to them as I knew I would not stand a chance against them in legal battles, but I still stood my ground and asked them why they registered the site after knowing of mine, but then I said that as a mutually beneficial non destructive solution I would allow them to make me an offer on the domain as I wanted to create a new unique brand that was not going to be confused with theirs.

They made me an offer of $4000 and I could have bargained for more but that would have been morally incorrect and I was happy with it anyway and Im sure they were delighted as well.

Sounds like you had them by the b*lls and you could have settled with a 5 figure !

It's not like you registered it in bad faith.
