Got a question

I'm new to this and opened an account with GoDaddy about a month ago. I've probably bought 40+ domains since then. The other night I placed an order for two more and received the usual email confirmation back. Usually they show up in my domain list within say 10 minutes or so.

Well, they didn't. So I emailed their support service with my problem and got back a reply the next morning that someone else had bought one of them before me but the other should show up in my account in a couple of hours. It doesn't show up all day, so I email them again. Today I get a response that "your registration for #@@ did not complete-the domain is already registered elsewhere".

Is this a normal thing where, after you check for availability then go through the whole payment/view advertising process and get confirmation of your payment for the available domain(s) that they can say, sorry, the process did not complete and issue you a refund? If so, can anyone recommend a registration service where this has never happened to them?

Thanks.

Welcome to Namepros, rocket7! :)
It's possible that the domain was taken either just before you or contemporaneous to your registration, and in the end the Registrar was not successful in completing the transaction for you ... and when they then issued you a refund. This has happened to me before at other Registrars besides GoDaddy.

>> "Today I get a response that "your registration for #@@ did not complete-the domain is already registered elsewhere"."

Can you expand on this a little bit, or provide the excat copy they sent to you? I'll look to see if I can locate one of the e-mail's that I have where this happened to me, and we can compare verbiage, if you wish. It may take me some digging to do this.
Thanks and sorry you didn't get the domain. :'(

Thanks for the welcome.

Here was their reply to the second one.

I apologize for any confusion this issue has caused you. Your registration for (I blanked out) did not complete through the internet. The domain is already registered elsewhere. Consequently we will refund the registration charge to your card.

We regret any inconvenience this has caused you.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way. You may also wish to read through some of the frequently asked questions on our Support Forum: (I didn't post the whole thing)

Good enough ... I have some digging to do now (thanks a lot)! LOL. :D
Will be back with you shortly to compare notes ... I wouldn't assume that there's any nefarious plot here, not that you'd do so anyway. Perhaps other's have had similar experiences, and with Registrar's other than GoDaddy?
Thanks all. :)

281 e-mail's later: :o

"Thank you for your recent order with Register.com.
We apologize but register.com was unable to successfully register the domain
names listed below. Your credit card has not been charged for the following
domain name(s)."

Propogation over the internet is another factor, as well ... if I am correctly recalling the circumstance of this particular "lost registration". Certainly, I don't believe the issue is unique to GoDaddy, IMHO.
Hope this helps somewhat.

Domains are real time, and until you pay they dont send a request to backorder it. So if by some chance someone else pays first while your in the process of registering then you lose. they win. It is a slower version of expiring domain names. First one to get that request in wins the prize. This isnt a registrar problem. I would say your lucky actually, many registrars you might have to argue with for a refund.

Thanks for the info.. I just thought it was odd that it happened with two of them at the same time. I can see how someone else, if they were searching for the same name, could get in front of me because that site makes you view all of their advertising for various services before you are allowed to pay for the domain(s). It is really slow.

I had one of my names taken from me 11 days after it was fully registered in my name. It was a really good generic name, and I got a buyer right away. Just after we signed a contract, the name was pulled from me. It was a Tucows registrar. Their explanation was that it rightfully belonged to someone else, there was a computer glitch that put the name out for sale when it shouldn't have. Buried deep in some of those contracts that you agree to when you buy a name, it says that there's a 30-grace period whereby any errors can be corrected. Perhaps there are legitimate errors and glitches. IMHO, there's a lot more funny business and deals being made over good names that become available. So beware. You may want to hold onto a name for a month before you begin developing a website or sign any contracts for sale, just in case the name is pulled. BTW, I filed papers to request an ICANN dispute resolution and never heard from them. I reported the incident to a number of agencies that supposedly watch the registrar business. No one would help ---I guess these places only wake up and do something for well known corporations and the like.
