Hey People,
I have been scanning the net to see if I can get more data on OpenSocial's APIs. It appears from Garrett Rogers of iQmetrix has indicated that the tools really rock.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Google/?p=791

Some Quick Facts that I have gathered:

1. Opensocial will have three sets of common APIs:
* Profile Information (user data)
* Friends Information (social graph)
* Activities (things that happen, News Feed type stuff)

2. Hosts agree to accept the API calls and return appropriate data.

3. Google won’t try to provide universal API coverage for special use cases, instead focusing on the most common uses.

4. Specialized functions/data can be accessed from the hosts directly via their own APIs.

5. All applications can use standards-based – HTML and JavaScript.

6. Some of the partners for OpenSocial are: Oracle, Salesforce.com, Hi5, iLike, LinkedIn, Slide, Ning, Friendster and Plaxo

7. OpenSocial will allow independent developers to build applications that run on any participating network, using the data stored by that network.

Potential for Mobile and DotMobi
---------------------------------

OpenSocial has enormous potential for Mobile and DotMobi development.

1. Developers could tap OpenSocial APIs to build powerful mobile applications for DotMobi websites.

2. Since the tools are common HTML and JavaScript, compliance with DotMobi and iPhone should not be a problem.

3.
Developers can build fast and robust level content applications for DotMobi and iPhone websites.

I welcome any other information that could added to this thread concerning DotMobi develop using OpenSocial APIs.

Later People. :)

.US domains.US domains
Very very interesting, and even more encouraging!

It must be a complete coincidence that Microsoft just paid a lot of money for a stake in Facebook.

Either way, this could be a (very) big deal for mobi.

Rep added!

===Update===
Marc Andreessen has posted more technical data on OpenSocial's APIs and architecture on his blog "blog.pmarca.com".
http://blog.pmarca.com/2007/10/open-social-a-n.html

Great stuff!

If Marc Andreessen is saying (effectively) that OpenSocial is more open than Facebook, you're onto something here!

Thanks. The race is on to build a super social network. Let's see who is the winner in 6-12 months.

BTW, .mobi does not allow javascript, i hope they relax the rule a bit. But some cellphone browsers only supoort limited javascript.

Agreed!

IMHO they will (assuming it can be demonstrated beyond doubt that the benefits outweigh the disbenefits) as soon as they've heard from enough people that this is stopping them from developing killer applications in the most open of open platforms.

If this is indeed the case, we should probably organize an informal lobbying effort.

I have an opinion about the current .mobi site restrictions..

If someone built a .mobi site for a specific purpose say for more advanced handsets... & as a result it was non-compliant... but it worked for it's target audience (i.e. owners of the 2008 Google phones as an example) I can't see mTLD coming down hard on them to remove the advanced functions to make the site .mobi compliant... can you??

It would support the logical progress that must & will happen regardless... just a hunch..

GREAT research Quasar! You MAY have struck the "BIG GET"

Lets all keep a close eye on this.....this week's OpenSocial.mobi registration by Google

This could be HUGE...

Now MySpace has joined Google in promoting and contributing to OpenSocial
....together they seek to destroy FaceBook

Here is tomorrow's NY Times article discussing the Google/MySpace collaboration... OpenSocial

Here is the NY Times article text:

MySpace Joins Google Alliance to Counter Facebook

By MIGUEL HELFT and BRAD STONE
Published: November 2, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 1 β€” MySpace and Bebo, two of the world’s largest social networking sites, today joined a Google-led alliance that is promoting a common set of standards for software developers to write programs for social networks.

The alliance now presents a powerful counterweight to Facebook, which, after opening up its site to developers last spring, has persuaded thousands of them to create programs for its users. The addition of MySpace, the world’s largest social network, and Bebo, the No.1 site in Britain, could also put pressure on Facebook to drop its own standard and join the alliance, called OpenSocial.

β€œOpenSocial is going to become the de facto standard for developers rights out of the gate,” said Chris DeWolfe, chief executive and co-founder of MySpace. Mr. DeWolfe said that developers using OpenSocial would be able to instantly reach 200 million users across various sites.

Google and others said they had invited other social networks, including Facebook, to participate in the alliance, whose existence was first reported Tuesday.

β€œThe most important principle about openness is that everyone is invited to join,” said Eric E. Schmidt, Google’s chief executive.

Other members of the alliance include Friendster, Hi5, LinkedIn, Plaxo and Ning, as well as the business software makers Oracle and Salesforce.com. The creators of several of the most popular programs on Facebook, including Slide, RockYou, iLike and Flixter, have announced their intention to write programs conforming to the OpenSocial standards.

The alliance is not likely to erode the popularity of Facebook or immediately alter the dynamics of the social networking market. But it could help revitalize the sites of some of its members, which have seen their social networks eclipsed by the popularity of MySpace and Facebook. Orkut, Google’s social network, for instance, is popular in Brazil and a few other countries, but has failed to gain traction in the United States.

Google may benefit in other ways. As other social networks draw more users, it could sell more advertising on those sites. TheInternet search giant already has a $900 million advertising partnership with MySpace, and sells advertising on various other social networks. Its ads often appear inside the applications created by third-party developers. Google and MySpace have been in discussions about developing a common set of programming standards for about a year, the companies said.

At a news conference today at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., Joe Greenstein, the chief executive of Flixter, whose applications allow users to share movie recommendations, demonstrated his program running inside MySpace.

β€œWe are excited about OpenSocial,” Mr. Greenstein said. But he added that Flixter was not planning to pressure Facebook, where millions of members use the company’s program, to adopt OpenSocial. Mr. Greenstein said that customizing his company’s application that runs on Facebook to run on OpenSocial had been a painless task.Facebook declined to comment.

Facebook days may well be numbered

mySpace joining them is a huge piece of news. Watch this space because this project may have more to do with the future of .mobi than everyone realizes. If they choose any other than .mobi...watch out! If .mobi doesn't let them go any further regarding the building limitations (javascript and others needed for social networking sites)...then they may not build upon .mobi, although I think ultimately the mltd will negotiate.
However, in negotiating exceptions to the rule of ".mobi compliant with any, even the most basic mobile devices" they would be going against their own philosophy. In any case, they may do it, because the $ is there and there is too much to lose if they don't.
I don't think that .mobi would like to be left out of something in which Google, mySpace and eventually many others big ones will be on, pouring millions in marketing campaigns in a short time, to defeat facebook...
Imagine, in the other hand, how good it would be for .mobi if they start to promote their new portals with the .mobi extensions?!

Great News!!!! So google regd a .mobi and doesnt own the .com. Just think about the potential!!! :)

Scandiman recently explained a key piece of info re: mobi's abilities.

My take on it was that the mobi restrictions are about default - basically a site is scripted so its defaults to use by any phone - but may include much more bells and whistles should it be accessed by a more sophisticated device. So it comes down to dev.

I may not have gotten it right - but that was what i understood his comment to mean. Scandi, can you clarify?

*If someone could explain whether there are any requirements of using XHTML Basic vs. regular XHTML that would be great.

You nailed that point. With the new API, developers can build applications that run on participating social networks. I don't see how you connected that to anything to do with .MOBI or any other TLD.
