.tv Google rolls out 'the future of television'

Saying it will "change the future of television," Google on Thursday rolled out Google TV - the internet giant's venture into web-TV integration.

The application, run by Google's Android operating system, lets users search for content from their television, DVR and the web.

Even as sites like Google-owned YouTube have increasingly emerged as viable entertainment options, the move is a nod to a basic truth of leisure time.

"There's still not a better medium to reach a wider and broader audience than television," said Google project director Rishi Chandra.

The platform will let users search for content, from the name of a TV show to the name of a network, in much the same way a Google search works. They'll get results from TV and the web and be able to watch either on their TV screen.

"Videos should be consumed on the biggest, best, brightest screen in your house," Chandra said. "That's your TV."

Thanks, guys...it's all looking good for the .tv extension.

Imagine more and more people feeling very comfortable typing in .tv on their home hdtv and/or digital tv or ipad, iphone or whatever looms on the horizon. The extension that is so natural, positioned and branded in the consumers mind for 60+ years, for the technical environment...imagine that.

I can hear the sizzle of the steak already!

...it's not just about google alone. It's about the technology(if you saw the video) wherein people will access the .tv channel directly. Watch the vid that The Watcher provided. If you don't grasp the implications right now, you may in time.

@freedom - My logic is that thousands of people will be creating media channels specifically for Google TV. So, I'm guessing a decent percentage of these "producers" or media curators will use new .TV domains to brand their channel.

After reading and posting on your blog, I saw you have not bought any .tv's. I am not telling what to do, but if you do get involved in .tv it would be great if you keep writing about it.

I feel that .TV has the most upside "potential" of any extension for reasons we all have discussed many times. Love to have you join us more often here and keep up the great work on your blog.

I suspect that Google TV will lead to an increase in the number of .TV regs but the brandable types that bloggers and non-domainers register because the most obvious choices are taken. Eventually this increase in brandable registrations will crowd the .TV space and make it more difficult to get a decent .TV domain (not to the extent of .COM but a similar effect where some companies will choose to go to the domain aftermarket). We'll see.
