Introducing the Google Mini

A Google search puts the Web’s information at your fingertips. The Google Mini does the same thing for your website or corporate intranet. Designed for small and medium-sized businesses, the Google Mini is a hardware and software search appliance that offers your company the power and productivity of Google search.

The Google Mini:

* Indexes and searches up to 50,000 documents.
* Works with more than 220 different file formats, including HTML, PDF, Microsoft Office and WordPerfect.
* Is easy to set up and requires minimal ongoing administration.
* Costs $4,995 for all hardware and software, including a year of support and hardware replacement coverage.

Just point the Google Mini at your content, add a search box to your website and you’re set. The Mini crawls your content and creates a master index of documents ready for instant retrieval whenever an employee or customer types in a search query. It's that simple to make your public website or intranet as easy to search as Google.com.

50,000 seems like a low number though, doesn't it?

Ya, it does seem pretty low. I guess thats why its for small businesses. Imagine if these ever get cheap enough, to say a couple hundred bucks, so that they would be almost as common as servers. ;)

I don't get it..
what does it do exactly lol?

Itallows you, or your audience, to search your documents as you would with google. For instance, I work for an online real estate company. If we were to use google mini we could put a search box on our site and the user coudl type "3 bedroom 2 bath single family home near the beach" and it would return relevant properties. Very powerful for that sort of thing IMHO.

Yeah it'd be great for sites like that. But the price is a little high at the moment.

It is absurdly low. I have Google Desktop installed, and right now it tells me that I have:

Number of items Time of newest item
Total searchable items 48,781 Jan 19
Emails 4,068 Aug 25
Chats 245 Jan 3
Web history 4,814 Jan 19
Files 39,654 Jan 19

That's just on one computer. How much more for an active company intranet?

I think for that use it is not an affordable tool. You can easily build a search function to spider every single word and supply results within a site for very cheap. Furthermore, you can add www.atomz.com offers this for free if you dont want something customized and just to spider a site and return page results depending on the search query.

It's appliance for small business. Most Small Business won't have $5,000 to fork out for this.

This is different from the Mac Mini, right? ;)

I've never even heard of a mac mini.

50,000 would be ok for searching, something like legal documents for a law firm or something, it doesn't say you can't have 50 page documents.

Well the Desktop search is pretty handy especially if you have a big harddrive and alot of files on your computer and can't remember where you put something.

They're selling thier brand name -nothing special.

Google excels at searching unstructured documents like that found on the internet. Intranet and corporate networks usually contain very structured documents and can get by with simple search engines like the free http://search.mnogo.ru/
