Report: Google Doesn’t Renew Google.de, Site Goes Down

Reports are coming in from Germany that Google.de was down “for many hours” yesterday, and has now gone live again. We’re trying to confirm the reason, but it appears to be because Google forgot to renew the Google.de domain name. It expired and someone registered it. While the site was down the site showed a standard domain name registrar parked page (probably including Google Ads).

Google.de expired and hijacked?

according to techcrunch

Reports are coming in from Germany that Google.de was down “for many hours” yesterday, and has now gone live again. We’re trying to confirm the reason, but it appears to be because Google forgot to renew the Google.de domain name. It expired and someone registered it. Domain name management can be tricky - email renewal notices can often get lost because employees have left the company. A number of registrars specialize in handling large company domain names to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen. Google uses one of those services, MarkMonitor, for at least its Google.com domain name. If Mark Monitor was also managing their .de domain name it is a serious black mark on their record.

I want to stress that this is an unconfirmed story at this point. If anyone has any additional information, please pass it on. A screen shot of the site when it was down would be ideal.

wonder if anyone know if it was hijacked or actually caught by a lucky domainer AND howmuch the guy paid for, plus how much google paid to get it back . . .

LOL! I love it.
Hope it is true just to make it even funnier.

I really doubt google forgot to renew... plus there is a process the domain has to go to through before "dropping."

It was reported hijacked yesterday, not expired.

Whois Record

After reading the recent TDNam debacle, my first thought was maybe they had the name registered with GoDaddy :)

If this name was really dropped, I'm sure we should have known it no later than pending delete period.

Here's some info on this incident:

http://www.dailydomainer.com/news/200735-googlede-back-under-googles-control.html

Apparently MarkMonitor is to blame for the hijack (they didn't respond to a transfer request, which was interpreted as approval in accordance with German registry rules), and DeNIC is responsible for the domain ending up with a drop catcher (looks like they very briefly dropped the domain when they tried to return it to Google... long enough for the drop catcher to grab it)!
