Google cracks me up

So, I have this wine website: www.pinotgris.biz

It is ranked on Page 1 or 2 overall on Yahoo and MSN for a search on Pinot Gris.

However, on Google, it depends on the day you do the search. Some days, I'm on page 3, some days Page 4, and some days I can't find it in the Top Ten pages. Then it will pop back in on Page 3 or 4 again. The rankings are not consistent, and I'm wondering why, as the other two SE's mentioned are very consistent.

Google is also not consistent with their number of pages returned for a given search. Last week, there were almost 2 million returns for Pinot Gris. This week there are only about 450,000. Plus, another search term has gone from 500,000 to 700,000 results in just a couple of days.

I understand how PageRank works, but wondering why Google is so inconsistent. What's going on with them? I'm starting to wonder if they are really the best SE out there.

Today, after the site had been missing from the Top Ten Google pages for a week...it's back on page 3. I really wish I understood why it's bopping in and out like that.

Eh... That's Google for you. Google has done the same to me in the past. Where MSN and Yahoo would index hundreds and thousands of pages and Google would only take about 80. I really don't get Google sometimes.

I think you need to make an impression that your site is worthy of being at Page 3.

I exactly don't know what is going on behind the scene. But yes one thing I can say is that if you have a page 3 position and if this is just dwindling here and there. Shoot some High authority backlinks from relevant sites and it will stop dwindling. :D

Don't know if this is the right way for it. So please don't quote me on it. It is just based on experience in past.

Thanks.

From a statisticians perspective, it would be smarter to add a level of randomisation to the search results to get a better picture on the response of the person searching. Giving exactly the same results every time does not allow for researching the response rates of the searcher and therefore giving better future search results.

Yahoo and MSN still don't understand the value of the search data and how to give it more value. Google is thinking long term.

I know that with my website the number of visitors we get from Google will vary greatly day to day on whether we get backlinks from major websites within the week or not. We always seem to get a jump in traffic from google whenever we get links from thestreet.com but then the traffic after a week the traffic seems to settle back to the normal levels.

Remember google are constantly playing around with their algorithm and of course they are constantly indexing pages. Although your jumpiness in the SERPS is extreme it is not all that uncommon.

Do you change/update the content often or is it pretty much static?
I assume that if it's on page 3, 4 you are not receiving visits from google neither right?

Content has been pretty static for the last month or so.

I like the point that was made by VURG about Google possibly wanting a randomness factor in their search results to promote variety. That's interesting.

well that point is interesting but for myself I doubt that it's the cause as where would be point of seo'ing a site ? Would make sense if the randomization would be done out of the firsts relevant results.. That would maybe be something possible... But reading what you are saying is that you jump from page 3 to the unknown.... So the randomizer here would need at lease to be worked out a bit. Else the whole meaning of outputting relevant search results would be inexistent since those search results would be "randomized"..

Am not really sticking on this..

I very much doubt Google would randomize their search results. It goes directly against what a search is meant to do (ie most relevant first etc).

Sites at the top of the SERPS can fluctuate which is believed to be caused by Google's algorithm that tracks what links people click on. The thought being if you click on a result then it must be more towards what you are looking for so when the next person does the same search the clicked link can potentially now hold more weight as others have indicated it is more relevant than other results.

Mister D... I agree

Peter...I can see what you're saying, but if sites are fluctuating that much from day to day, then maybe Google's not consistently displaying the most relevant results.

That thing happens with every SEOer. You cannot make sure everything with your page rank in the searching result. Noone know exactly about Google SE algorithm

I have to same problem, I spent lots of time on SEO to get top 5 for certain keywords and google happily gives it too me only to remove me the next day. Does't make any sense.
