Google has clarified its stance on the .co domain, days after it was released for sale globally.

Registrars are pushing the Colombian domain as an alternative to the largely oversubscribed .com. However, Google normally keeps country-specific top level domains local, so those with a .co.uk extension rank better in the UK but not as well elsewhere.

However I don't understand why he says that itโ€™s disappointing how the domain has been advertised without it actually being "fit for purpose".

Yeah, I don't understand that either.

This is promising though:

"We will rank .co domains appropriately if the content is globally targeted. Webmasters will soon have the functionality to be able to specify this by using the geotargeting options in Google Webmaster Tools."

I am not a big fan of g00gles forced geo-targetting, it puts domain extensions at a disadvantage when it comes to ranking.
It doesn't seem fair, either, to lift the restriction from just a few cctld's.
Lifting the restriction may depend on whether the .co extension gets used properly by the majority who register them. At the moment, it is looking like a cybersquatters dream come true.

Question is:

Anyone RIGHT NOW ranking well with .CO extension for some major keywords?

All the rest is peanuts IF these domains do not rank well.

Maybe I am missing something BUT here is the source, the Google quote?

Can this be just speculative for us to buy more .CO's?

.TV and .ME are in the same club. There might be others as well.

amazing news if you picked up a couple of .co domains early, if its basing it on keywords not extention location.

Love it, .co is going to become massive if this is true.

I'm curious: Do .co get any unexpected traffic? Everyone's always saying .co would be great for typosquatters etc. But have any .co owners noticed any type-in traffic to their new domains?
