Good Password Protection Script?

Does anyone know a really good script to password protect an area on a website? I want to build a site where members pay to access content on the site, so I need it to be very secure.

Preferrably free, if there is such, or under $25. Any help is appreciated!

theres an option in cpanel where you can password protect folders and files, thats the safest one i know of

well, that uses htaccess, but hard coded passwords are pretty stong right? ill code one for you for 20 if you want.

You'll do it for NP$?? Can you show me a demo or give me more info? Ive seen some that scramble the protected pages w/ cgi or something like that, so you can't just type it in and access it. Is this script like that?
