Didn't know @Paul Nicks was listed as an inventor for 2 earlier patents back in 2013......

U.S. Patent number 8,447,701 is titled “Appraising domain names using comparative data” and 8,447,702 (pdf) is “Domain appraisal algorithm”.

Can anyone explain in layman's terms what is unique about these patents, that has not already existed for many years?

Not the foggiest idea.....went slightly cross eyed while reading the patent

I suppose it covers their backside in case other more lazy/less reputable sources just try and mimic what they have?

I skimmed over the patents. They are way above my pay grade to understand.

The patent titles seem overly broad, but the actual patents seem to cover a very specific process.

Can an expert in IP law please explain to me what this patent means for other domain name valuation tools, such as Estibot? Should they pay a royalty or cease their services?

It is evident that predicting domain name value is not a novel invention, as we all engage in it daily, either manually or automatically.

Estibot is far older, zero impact on that.

New tools? Might need to lawyer up, depending on the case.
