GoDaddy Expiring Auctions... Do you think this is fair?

Okay, I was involved in an auction that ended this past Tuesday. Long story short, I lost, but this is how it went down.

  • First day of Auction, Bidder 1 is winning with inital bid of $10.
  • I outbid him by putting in a proxy bid of $102, I am now the current high bidder at $15.
  • Two days before auction ends, my bid is ran up to $72, I am still high bidder.
  • Last day of auction my bid is ran up and I lose to Bidder 3 (Only three of us were participating, Bidder 1 with only the initial bid, myself and Bidder 3).
  • Bidder 3 decides he doesn't want the domain anymore, so they offer it to me on Saturday and tell me I have 24 hours to pay $72 for the domain + $15 for the .net renewal + ICANN fee's, comes out to $87.17.

But why do I have to pay $72 when if Bidder 3 never came into the picture, I would of won the domain for $15 ? Sounds a bit shady doesn't it? So my bid is ran up and of course the winner doesn't pay and now they want me to pay an inflated price for the domain which only got to that point because this Bidder 3 ran up the price?

Can someone please explain this to me? I called Godaddy on two different occasions to get an explanation, was on the phone each time for more than a half an hour (mostly waiting while they talked between themselves about this matter) and never got a clear answer. Only telling me You can pay the $72 + additional fee's, or you do not have to buy the name. Those are your choices.

Really?

What do you all think? Is there someone who can explain to me thoroughly as to why I should pay the $72? If someone can, I will happily pay for the domain at this price, but as of right now I have a bad taste in my mouth over this situation and I don't want to touch it.

Thanks,
-Mike C.

if you don't pay their price, consider using godaddy's backorder service on that domain.

lol is all I can say to that.

conclusion: your problem is not the price.
72$ for this particular DN is still ok for you.
you just hate the unfair way this price was reached.

now if you want the domain, just forget that you came to know how the price was reached and just imagine that you won the auction for 72$ and buy it

the world is full of blatant injustice lol

I never understand people who want to just over look the obvious unfair acts, especially by corporations.

Yes, I won't mind paying the $72 for the domain, but I want a CLEAR and REAL explanation as to why I have to pay $72 instead of $15.

I have never been in the business to get ripped off, not by anyone here on NP, and especially not by Godaddy.

Because that's the price they've told you. Need it to be clearer than that ? You can call and speak to someone and try and get it lowered... bitching here isn't going to help.

You bid $102. You're saving $30 on what you were willing to pay. With 2 bids? It's LIKELY that someone else would have bid on it at $15 even if they weren't willing at $70.

If it showed 5 bids at $40 - maybe it would have gone higher.

You're not being ripped off. You can walk away and lose NOTHING.

I've called them four times as states already in this thread. I have also emailed then twice with no response. I am "bitching" here because they can't give me a clear response.

The day I can pay the rent with principle instead of profits, I'll join in on the battles against injustice...

You guys may be trying to pay rent with domains, but domains is not my business. It's amazing to me how many people rather be in the dark about where there money goes, but at the same time are telling me this is how they make their money. I hope you all have good money managers / CPA's.

Who's in the dark?

You bid a proxy. You got outbid. Bid was retracted. They asked you if you wanted it at your original high bid.

Seems clear to me. The other two real options are CANCEL the auction, REDO the auction (there is no time unless GD eats the renewal pre-auction).

Setting the price at $15 makes no sense at all - except it's $15 GoDaddy would get as pure profit.

To be honest - if you were an END USER you'd be thrilled they picked this out of the three options. It's all perspective - you can't do the right thing for everyone and everything.

Oh well. Good Luck.

But it wasn't set to my max bid, this is what you don't really seem to understand. $72 is just a number they came up with and cannot explain as to how or why. Have I really been this unclear about this situation?

That's all I want, lol. I spoke with godaddy again just now (4th time) and they are now claiming there was a 4th bidder, but for security reasons they couldn't release this persons info (lol his bidder 4 name, yeah I am serious...) I am still waiting on a response to my email I sent last night to [email protected] and now they have recommended that I contact [email protected]...

Missed this post. This is really odd. Bidder 4 is an anonymized name! Should be in the bid history - but I see why you're concerned and "in the dark now".

But it wasn't set to my max bid, this is what you don't really seem to understand. $72 is just a number they came up with and cannot explain as to how or why. Have I really been this unclear about this situation?

So your bid went from $15 to $72 without anyone bidding? That doesn't make sense and I can see why you're confused (unless I don't get it still)

My guess is that Bidder 3 bid up to $70 and your proxy outbid him. This would have forced your bid to actually register at $72. He then subsequently bid again.

Your Proxy bid would bid multiple times depending on the other bidder. Each one a separate trackable bid.

If you go to the Auction on GoDaddy you should still be able to access the bidding history by looking at "Auctions I won." You should see your PROXY BID at $72. If you don't then something is odd.

Yeah bid history is only bidder 3 continuously bidding and running up the amount. Bidder 4 is never shown.

Was his first bid $70? That would explain it to me. I understand the frustration but if you were willing to go over $70 and you like it? Just pay for it.

That's the Snapname/Namejet backorder fee and you're guaranteed to get it (unless renewed).

No point standing proud and letting the window of opportunity slip on principles that no one notices or will remember. Though credit to you if you do :) Remember - Bob P kills elephants!

He won the domain and you didn't. Is that clear enough? If he's selling it to you at $72, he's losing $35 already. Is that clear enough?

But note if he doesn't pay GoDaddy, they will offer it to the 2nd highest bidder as if the winning bidder never showed up. ie $15.

If the bidding history doesn't show a 4th bidder, then there probably wasn't one. Besides, the winner would be hustling them too, and not just you.

What are you talking about? lol. Nothing of what you just said made any sense.

Well there's no talking to some people then. The winning bidder can ask whatever they like for the domain. You're lucky he is willing to lose $35 (since he outbid you).

Did you read this thread at all? I am flabbergasted at your responses.

The "Winning Bidder" didn't pay for the domain, GODADDY is offering it to ME for $72.00, but considering the winning bidder had no intentions in the first place other than to run up the bids, all of his bids should be nullified, leaving me with only to have to pay $15.00 + fee's.

Remember this is a EXPIRING DOMAIN AUCTION, HELD BY GODADDY FOR GODADDY. Not a seller just posting it on their platform. I am not sure at all who you are trying to refer to in any of your posts.

Ah. Then I agree with you. They should strip away all his bids and offer it to you for $15. Did you mention that to them? If there was a fourth bidder they should be offering it to them, not you.

I just checked your first post. You said the buyer offered it to you. Not GoDaddy.

Exactly my point. I have mentioned it to them. But even godaddy Support/Staff is a bit confused about the situation. Five different phone calls have resulted in five different stories.
