I picked up many very valuable domains with GoDaddy. Their service is not bad, you just have to know when to use them.
The reason you didn't get that domain that was registered with GoDaddy, is probably because it already passed REGISTRAR-HOLD. Once an expired domain passes that status, the registrar gives the domain back to the registry. When that happens it becomes a chance game. And usually the more powerfull services wins. For example, pool.com has more than 70 registrars attempting to backorder a domain, so they get much more than GoDaddy, who I believe is the only registrar who is backordering the domain.
GoDaddy is the 3rd largest registrar, so they have millions of domains registered with them. Because of that many expiring domains were registered with them. Any expired domain that was registered with GoDaddy, you should backorder with them if the domain has not passed REGISTRAR-HOLD. If the domain already passed that status, then try a more powerfull service if you really want the domain.
