GoDaddy Auctions Shill Bidding?

I've seen some auctions of bad - ok domains jump huge amounts for no reason. Is there alot of shill bidding that happens in their auctions? If so, my question is what happens if there a domain lets say

crappydomainname.com

and Its currently at $100USD with 8 days left

I bid $125USD

With 30 minutes left the price is $10000 USD

I bid $10025 and win the auction

What if most of the bids from 125 - 10025 were shill bids?

Which price do I pay?

If you're uncomfortable paying $10025 don't bid $10025. Shill bids and auctions go together like salt and pepper. Bid up to the point where you'll do cartwheels for stealing the name. Go any higher and you'll have shill bid doubts.

I second this!

Unfortunately shill bidding is an ugly part of the business that will always be there.

As ecalc said, just set your limit before going in and stand by it. No matter how bad you want that name, stick to your guns.

There is always another name waiting just around the corner.

Definitely some shill bidding going on at GD, for example

greenlife52.com 13bids $401 1D 23H

really? greenlife52? greenlife51, greenlife53 are available.....obvious shill bidding here

The domain itself is not that valuable, what is valuable is -
Alexa Ranked 5.8M. Many backlinks and is a PR6.

I sell far more domains at SEDO and Godaddy (premium listings for .COM/.Net and Godaddy auctions for .TV) and via direct Whois contact than at Afternic.
happy blogging..!!

And tepin.com went from 900$ to $8000 within 1 hour. Very sketchy. I bid mid xxx and I wasn't even close. If I appraised this domain on namepros no one would say high $xxxx, and it wasn't an enduser sale it was an expired auction, wow.

We'll just have to see if tepin actually closes for this price.

I forgot to put this on my watch list, so let us know if the price changes on your list.

Please?

If it disappears, that probably means the current registrant has renewed it.

You pay the winning bid amount.

Hopefully if there is shill bidding godaddy figures it out, but i would't count on it.

And just because you think a name is crappy and people naturaly wait until the final moments to bid, doesn't mean its shill.

And just because its godaddy auctions doesnt mean only budget minded domain forum people are bidding on this platform.

I think what's obvious in a lot of cases is that people don't understand some very basic things, such as:

1. In auctions, a lot of people wait till the last possible moment to put a bid in, such as myself. If there is a domain I want, I don't want to tell the world about it, I don't want to bring attention to that domain.

2. That people, still to this day, don't know how to Google. greenlife52 at first glance seems odd, until you find out what Brad posted above or you do a very simple Google search - https://www.google.com/search?q=gre...pw.r_qf.&fp=cd0820781f4eef2e&biw=1216&bih=510

So we have threads like this with some people paranoid about shill bidding, when they don't do the most basic of checks on a domain name.

1) you will never know if there were any or not
2) why would you bid $10000 USD for crappydomainname.com?
3) if you bid, you better mean it or it will be YOU who will be at fault for not completing the transaction!

is there any thread discussion about
Traffic vs price factor
Backlink vs price factor
PR vs Price factor
Age vs Price factor

if there is no. I think we can discuss it

Turns out I was right here. The closing price now shows in my account at about $4000, half of the $8000 it initially sold for, shill bidders galore from 4000 - 8000.

At a minimum, get the word out so everyone knows about it. Also, vote with your dollars by taking your business elsewhere.
