Gmail's "use own domain" service

Can anyone explain me in easy words (I am not a very technical person, although I'm learning!) how I can set up a Gmail account using my own domain (Gmail Hosted)?

Is it needed to buy a domain (for example Moniker, Namecheap, etc) and move it away from their servers, putting the domain on Gmail's server? Or does the domain remain at the registrar's DNS while I have to change the settings there to link it to Gmail?

Also, where exactly have I got to request the mailbox? I'd like two of them for my own domain, I know I have to write Gmail to make a request (and apparently they rarely refuse) but does anyone know the exact address?

PS: I am talking about Gmail's service where you actually have a mailbox using @your-domain.com , I am NOT refering to a regular @gmail.com mailbox with changing the 'from address' for every outgoing mail.

Call me out of the loop, but, while this seems cool...

what is the point of doing this?

This is not sarcastic at all, I'm really wondering. I'd like to start if there's a reason.

May I ask just an additional question before setting it all up: imagine the domain would ever crash or not be renewed or so... (I know, unlikely to happen, but out of interest I will complete my question) Can you still access your mailbox somehow to recover your stored mails, even when the domain is not set up properly to Gmail anymore?
(bit like Everyone.net where users' mailboxes are still reachable even if the domain owner terminates the deal with everyone.net)

A bit late, but I haven't found anything inside gmail giving an option to access
those emails somewhere so far. I'll keep checking unless someone else posts
and says negative.

To have your email how it is in Gmail (and all of Google's other services, but I don't use any of them). You can access it it from anywhere, and it looks great and works great. They have the best spam filter of anywhere.

You should be able to. You get an URL to login which you don't need to use your domain for at all.

when using this service, do you guys login with your gmail account to proceed or do you create a new account?
when I went to sign up, I had both options.
Whats the difference?

Just use your previous Google account.

Hmmm..

I'll keep this in this topic instead of starting a thread.

Whether I use google or not...is there anyway to check ALL of my e-mail accounts under one name, without having to log into seperate e-mail accounts?

You can do that in Gmail. Go into settings somewhere and add email addresses.

I have had plenty of problems with gmail domain service.
It all started when i moved to a new server.
for a few days i changed the Dns setting and tweaked whm to use gmail 's mx modifiers.
but then i could not send or receive mails properly.
Google also provides a file in the beginning which is needed to verify your account.
That also created problems for me when i moved to new server.
So I ditched google's hosted service.

Fabulous.com offers free dns management.
You can change your cname settings there.Or if your host offers dns management you can use that as well.(Dreamhost)

Just an additional question about this: does the owner of the domain get a special password to an area where you create the email addresses and mailboxes, or is the only password you get the log-in password for the mailbox with your own domain?

and how does the "domain ownership verification" work?

I doubt between starting a mailbox with a domain I already own, or registering a new one through Gmail directly and use that domain for emails.

It's very easy to set up with name.com. If I wanted a domain just for email, I would consider setting it up with them. They automatically set up a Google based homepage that lets you connect to your email through your homepage. (~$8/year, $6 for the 1st year) Great for novice domainers who just want their own email address and don't want to use a lot of time setting it up.

Is this only a web service or does it have pop3 service as well?
