Getting domain information inside Excel - Worthwhile ?

Hi,

I am creating an add-in for Excel that allows you to retrieve domain name information for a range of excel data.

For example you could select a range of cells containing a list of phrases you are interested in and by
selecting a right click menu option you could find out whether the .com .net .org etc domains for these phrases are registered.

I am sure there are lots of other useful tools that could be added.

Does this seem like a useful idea ?

I am looking for people who would trial the add-in and give me feedback on how to make the tool useful.

Terrible idea or could be useful, what do you think ?

Cheers

Are there not already websites that do this, and would they not have a faster load time etc than excel?

Would it generate a list of names based on combinations of phrases or words?

Hi sourcez,

Yes there are websites that do this. I don't see why they would have a faster response time that excel.
Most domain availability sites pass on a query via an api to an upstream provider, which is what the application would also be doing.

The idea of checking not just the domains for the listed words/phrases but also being able to generate combinations and use a dictionary to generate them sounds good.

Also the excel add-in would make a nice library for people to store their domain information, what they bought when, how much etc.

Would you be interested in taking a look when it's alpha version is complete ?

Cheers
Sam

I see, sure I'd be happy to have a look when you've finished alpha - sounds like an interesting little project!

I just figured browser was easier and hadn't thought of an all-in-one storage and check solution.
