I mainly only buy domain names that I plan on developing.
The very first thing I do after buying a domain name is to upload a simple home page and put a link to it from one of my other websites.
The reason for this is to get it indexed by the search engines as soon as possible. This is to get the clock ticking on the Google ‘Sandbox’ where Google and other SE’s don’t let newly indexed websites rank well for 6/9 months (not everyone believes there is such a thing). The other is that Google and other SE’s have stated that the longer your domain name has been included in their index the easier it will be for you to rank the site well in the search results. For a developer this is very important.
When I am looking at buying a domain on the aftermarket the first thing I do is check whether it has been indexed by any of the search engine. It pains me to see domains that were registered in 2003/4/5 etc that are still not in any of the search engines.
As a developer I would easily pay an extra 20/30% for a domain that had been indexed by the SE’s for a year or two. If you had managed to get a few links to the site and it had some PR, I would pay even more for it.
It only takes a couple a few minutes to do and I think it would make all your domains much more valuable when it comes to selling them.
Anyway, just a thought!
