I have an opportunity to purchase 2 geo's off the drop. The geo is a city of 170,000 people and the names are:
(geo)pressurewashing.com
(geo)mechanics.com

There are no significant search stats but a few adwords ads and some local businesses ranking for the keywords.

Are either of these names worth the $60 backorder fee? Or try to catch them after they expire for reg fee?

Please explain your answer.

Thanks.

I know it's likely that someone will get the names from reading this post, I don't care you are welcome to them. I'm more interested in learning than profiting from 2 marginal names.

I do $8.99 godaddy backorders on domains like that. However, that population is a little bit smaller than what I typically go after for geo + profession type domains.

i wont advice for the $60 backorder fees. I agree with skulldude on trying GD back orders for such names

I thought GoDaddy backorders were $18.99 not $8.99

Personally, I'd pass on those names. I don't think they are strong enough for low population city.

If you have no plans for these domains, I would pass.
There are better names (2-worders) available for reg fee.

I'd pass on them, doubtful they would would get any traffic or anyone would want to develop them

I would pass

Same here, I would pass as well. Wouldn't be worth the $60 backorder fee IMO

The city is too small and terms are too niche to make it worth backorder fee.

So what population levels would you consider to be the minimum for these types of names? And would your position change if the keyword was (geo)insurance or mortgage?

Thanks to all who have responded and voted in the poll so far.

The keyword makes a big difference. Obviously a term like GeoInsurance.com will have more value than GeoPressureWashing.com

It represents and entire industry.

Basically the smaller the city, the better the term needs to be.

But where is the line? Population 200,000, 500,000, 1,000,000? What size pop would a keyword like Mechanics or PressureWashing be a good buy? What pop would Mortgage or Condo be a good buy?

Assume the goal is enduser sales.

To me it depends more on what the city has going on than the actual size.

Miami is listed as the 43rd largest city in the US. Here are some larger cities by population (Omaha / Cleveland / Kansas City / Tucson / Louisville). However, despite being smaller a domain like MiamiCondos.com is probably worth more than the other 5 CityCondos.com combined because it is something that is popular there.

Cities like Aspen are tiny population wise, but there is a lot going on there.

In my opinion "Pressure Washing" is too specific of a term really. The only way I would consider buying it is if the city was in the millions.

Also research comparable sales (if any).

I would let it drop, and never reg it.

But don't hear me, it's just a noob's opinion.

I'd pass on those as well.. small population for one and reg fee term on the other hand :IMHO:

I thought GoDaddy backorders were $18.99 not $8.99

I have an investors edge account and then order over like 100 dollars and then apply a 25 percent discount, which makes them $8.99.

It's tough to say. I think those Mechanics/PressureWashing + geo would be a tough sell under most populations unless it was one of the huge cities like new york, LA, etc.

Generally speaking I stick to a top 50 US city or state when I buy those types of domains.
