I just visited http://www.seattle.gov/ -- I have always wondered how a citizen owned Geo site will compete with a gov owned Geo site... in the same geo namespace.

major city Geo .com sites do very well against city .gov sites since they get a ton of type in traffic because people just assume that their city.com is the official website for their city. i'm not sure about large city .tv sites though. it would lose traffic to the .com and the .gov and wouldnt have the very large type in traffic. that could change though if .tv becomes more mainstream.

Your post is kind of confusing.

Did you actually come to any conclusions about the difference, or was that more of an open ended statement?

he had asked how a geo site owned by a person can compete against the government's geo .gov site and my conclusion was that the .com easily competes with it right now and the .tv could also if it becomes mainstream.

Could not have been too confusing as you recognized an "open ended statement" and asked if I have "come to any conclusions". However, I neglected to put a question mark at the end, so I can see how that can be a bit confusing, to some. :)

Nonetheless, Both. While I have come to certain conclusions I did not want them to get in the way of an open discussion... so I asked an open ended question.

One conclusion, of mine, is that citizen Geos will not be able to compete very well with gov geos in the major arenas... unless they carve-out a citizen niche... like "man on the street" "voice of the people" speak truth to power kind of thing.

Wow!! The city of seattle owns the .tv too! I hope they bought it from a domainer!

This begs the "Geo v Geo" question even more. So far 'Silence' seems to be the answer from citizen-geo domainers... and that speaks volumes.

Long term (12-24 months) I can probably get SeattleWA.TV with more traffic than Seattle.gov. They have good traffic numbers.

Associated Cities sites with 1/2 Seattle.gov traffic numbers make seven figures. So if I can get 1/2 their traffic, I'm sure our investors will be happy.

Thanks for the input. I'm just wondering How you would compete? Ummm, I can see where a racier site... showing the club nightlife, concerts and other 'R' rated street happenings could top a gov site by offering stuff the gov won't touch but the people love. Yeah! I can see that! Thanks! and good fortune.

Social Networking tools and running a business model that allows us to quickly scale traffic. TV station and newspaper sites traditional have more traffic than govt sites. We are more akin to those traditional media companies that the content you describe.

Local where do you see the main sources of income are to be in .tv Geos??

Are you thinking much like .com Geos with Hotels. Rentals, Directory submission...etc or do you imagine a different income stream & development plan?

I am very interested to see how others plan developing their Geos as i own about 5 decent non US Geos that i really want to develop

Different. Hotels, Apartments, the standard stuff will be there; but these don't make as much money as you think. You can't make payroll with this revenue. I ran at Alexa top 3,000 site with a large travel vertical and got $30 checks a month. We built our own travel niche.

Our GEOS are a combination of the past two companies I started.

AllThings just released an article on Boston.tv (I post this for discussion, not promotion - I am not associated with them, but I think they are onto something) and I agree with James Barclay's premise. Boston.tv is like the prom queen in high school. Looks nice, but "where's the beef". Boston.tv traffic numbers prove that traffic is not sticking and the site has little substance.

Our sites won't look as nice as Boston.tv (Craiglist looks like crap and rules the classified world), but will have ALOT more substance.

I was the former CTO of a well know internet company with 20 million members. I've taken the tools loved the 20 million members, updated them, and I will be putting them on the GEOs. When I announce the relaunch of this company, half of you will go; oh yea I remember those guys. That was a cool concept.

I'm not Richard Rosenblatt, but our launch will add the credibility of another successful internet CEO with a history who is 100% behind .TV

There will be more information later this month.

Since GEO .tv names wont get the direct type in traffic, it will require major development to bring in traffic, so you can basically get any non generic GEO name and build it to the same level or even more traffic then the regular geo, such as owning MyBoston.tv instead of Boston.tv and having MyBoston.tv getting 10x more traffic and revenue than Boston.tv. Craigslist gets way more traffic than a generic name like Classifieds.com and Google gets way more traffic than a name like SearchEngine.com. The advantage of owning the generic form for .com is it doesnt require all the development to get major traffic. So I think this reduces the value of generic Geo .tv names since its not necessary to have them.

Generic GEO .TVs (for me at least) is about branding. Not traffic.

I've also said, I could have GotoAtlanta.tv and make it work, but if I can get Atlanta.tv for $3,000; then that saves me money and time brand building.

And yes Boston.tv, BostonMass.tv will be a strong competitor.

Thank you. We can take over the best wishes (goodwill) we can get.

You would think a company based on two sticky components

1) Video - like youtube
2) Toolset used by 20 million users (and we are using the same brand)

would have some redundancy to the process and therefore one of these would take off.

In fact, there are several blog entires on the net who mention our toolset was ahead of its time and wondering would have happened if the company was still around today.

Our problem, 100% dependency on CPM advertising and email marketing. We couldn't crank out emails fast enough. When ad rates fell, we got KILLED. Something to think about when building your video sites.
