GD backorder "time limit"

A handful of NP members have asked me privately when GoDaddy's time limit for backordering domains prior the drop is. I decided to establish the answer by experiment, as it turns out you can GD-backorder domains until 1:30pm EST, and GoDaddy will try capturing them starting at 2:00pm EST.

By 1:30pm, I mean that yours backorders must be COMPLETED (checked out, paid for, etc.) by 1:29:59pm EST. Don't wait until the minute before the deadline :sold:

Does anyone know if this is better than trying to catch domains on your own using scripts? Thanks and Rep!

Thanks for the rep, MicroGuy.

A couple months back I experimented with pitting GoDaddy's backorder system against Dynadot's API -- back when the API allowed one registration request per second, and GoDaddy consistently beat Dynadot. GoDaddy employs a handful of registrars for its drop-catching and has recently added one (Go Montenegro) to boost its drop-catching prospects. On rare occasion I have seen tasters (e.g. Maxim Internet) beat GoDaddy to the punch, but if I had to guess I'd say GoDaddy pings for each of your domains about 10 times per second during the drop window.

I'm a big fan of using GD's backorder system for "underrated" domains that are unlikely to have been backordered at Pool, NJ, or SnapNames. At $9 per backorder, I think it's a worthwhile option to stash in your arsenal. My only qualm against GD's backorder system is that they don't allow tasting. You should be highly confident you could recoup that $9 later through development or flipping before hitting that 'Submit' button.

i don't think the Godaddy domain back order thing works i had it on a domain i wanted and when it went to expire it went to the godaddy domain name aftermarket instead.. its like they new it was worth something....whats up with that

Backordering a domain on GoDaddy that hasn't yet expired simply places a $5 bid on the domain in the TDNAM aftermarket. If you're outbid and lose, you don't acquire the domain (but you do get a refund).

TDNAM has a tab in which viewers could pan through the current "most active" domains. It's possible that your bid briefly knocked the domain into that section, and a viewer prowling through that little farm outbid you.

In this thread I'm specifically discussing GD-backordering that are in the pendingDelete phase. These never get kicked to TDNAM because GoDaddy has effectively released them back to the registry.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how is it that you're getting a $9 price for GD backorders?

$8.90 each, actually :)

Try this:
* Sign up for a GoDaddy Investor's Edge Account (brings backorders down from $18.99 to $11.99)
* Backorder your domains in packs of nine and use coupon code WEASEL25 to get 25% off $100 or more ($11.99 >> $8.99)
* Pay using a PayPal credit card for an additional 1% cashback ($8.99 >> $8.90)

When your entire livelihood is grounded in domain investment, sometimes you gotta penny-pench.

Hey, no explanation necessary, no shame in looking for the best cheapest option. Which is precisely why I had asked. :)

Thanks. I'll be following this line from now on.

so far i am one for two with godaddy drop catching. it's a 50/50 shot the way i look at it. as long as the name is not already setup to be taken by snapnames or namejet you may have a good shot. for me it's worth the risk because it is a lot cheaper. now if i don't want to risk it because the name is sooo hot then i'll use namejet.

just my two cents :)

from the Domain Alert Pro webpage:

"Go Daddy Rules! I just tried to snap a name with a competitor. Those losers not only didn't get the domain, they never even bothered to notify me that there had been a registration change. Domain Alert notified me of the changes and alerted me that I needed to check on my other service which had failed. Once again, you've proven that Go Daddy knows how to build stuff that works!" - Daryl Acumen, Orem, UT

Thanks for the tips, JoshuaPz. Rep added. I was a bit confused about how to do this, but I figured it out. Here is what I did:

* Purchased a 1-month Investor's Edge Account from "Domains -> Backorder Domains" menu. The normal price is $29.99, but I got it for $25.49 using the 15% off code DOWNFORCE.
* Logged in again. Here I tried to buy the backorders my normal way (Domains -> Backorder Domains" menu). This DID NOT WORK. They were still the normal price of $18.99.
* I had to go to "Domains -> My Domains" and then "Buy/Sell -> Investor's Edge". There was no easy option to buy credits, so I selected 50 crappy pending delete domains and then went through the backorder process for them. This involved filling my shopping cart with the 50 backorders. They were now listed as $11.99/each. I used WEASEL25 to reduce the price from $599.50 to $449.62
* I immediately went to "Domains -> My Domains" and then "Buy/Sell -> Backorders and Monitoring". I selected the 50 new backorders and cancelled them. Now I have 50 backorder credits I can use in the future.

Now I have 50 backorder credits for a total price of $475.11, so $9.50 each. Otherwise I would have paid the normal price ($18.99 ea) minus 25% (WEASEL25) for $14.24 each. So this is a pretty good savings, even though I had to buy in bulk to make up for the investor's edge expense.

I hope GD doesn't try to renew the "Investor's Edge" account next month. I don't see it on my renewal dashboard.

If there is an easier way to do this, and I just missed it, I'd be interested in hearing it.

The Investor's Edge subscription DOES renew automatically each month for me and bills my credit card. Put a recurring reminder on your Google calendar to pop up an alert one day before each re-bill in case you wish to cancel it.

Also, if I am not mistaken, 25% off $11.99 is $8.99. If you're dishing out $9.50/backorder then you're overpaying :)

Yeah, it sucks that GD offers no simple way of purchasing "backorder credits." I usually buy these in packs of 7 or 9 as I need them. GD occasionally publishes 25% off $75 coupon codes, the last of which was gdp1121e (expired 11/28), which allows you to max out your discount on a 7-pack.

My $9.50 per backorder figure included the $25.49 I had to pay for a month of Investor's Edge in order to get the deal on the 50 credits. I will be disappointed if GD tries to charge me again next month for IE. If they do to you, maybe you selected the 12 or 24 month plan (which are cheaper)? I've looked through "My Renewals" and "My Account", and I don't see anything about an auto-rebill. And I paid extra to get a "1 month" subscription, rather than 12 or 24.

Ah -- now I see what you're saying. You are correct: Effectively $9.50 per backorder, and GD won't re-bill you. Nice investigative work.

Can someone clarify if the Investor's Edge backorders can be reassigned if GoDaddy is unsuccessful in acquiring the domain name? I've heard that this is different from the regular backorders in that you pay regardless of whether GoDaddy is successful or not (and do not receive backorder credit if they are not).

Yes, you could reassign any unsuccessful GD backorder. In fact, you can re-assign any (non-captured) GD backorder at all except between 1:30pm and 5:00pm on that day the backordered domain in question is scheduled to drop.

To cancel backorders for credit, log into your domain manager and enter the "Backorders and Monitoring" section. Check off the backorders you wish to anull and hit the "Cancel Selected" button on your upper bar.

The next time you add backorders by clicking the "Add Backorder" button via the Backorders and Monitoring section, GD will default to applying your backorder credits towards your new backorders. If you choose to backorder more domains than you have credit for, you'll then be redirected to a shopping cart/checkout section where you must pay for the difference between the # of chosen backorders and # of backorder credits in your account. Pretty simple system.
