we know those who registered keyword .coms back in late 90's and early 2000's have made what has turned out to be amazing investments now worth 5, 6 and possibly 7 figures. do you hand-register .coms now and plan to keep them long term with the view they may be worth many thousands in the future?

No. Generally speaking the best domains are long gone.
Bad domains are bad domains.

To think that domains will become valuable with age is being delusional. But many people try and lose at this game... it's not just a waiting game.

The basically only way/reason to handreg a name today, with the 'hope' it'll be worth 'thousands' later, is to be on top of a new trends, devices, discoveries etc. and reg the most relevent domain available to them. Then 'maybe' you'll have a chance if that field becomes a hit or a long term viability. ex: Smartphones, as that is a more recent product and not a thought back 'in the day'. But even this is a hit and miss process that is basically a crap shoot.

I think the opportunities are there, albeit more selection.

The opportunities to register popular dictionary words may not be there, but with a little creativity... its not bad.

I think that the opportunities to do that are long gone, at least in the .com TLD department, there isn't that much left to register that makes sense, it is extremely difficult to hand register a .com that makes any sense. There are a few .info and .biz but I am not sure how valuable those will be in the future with hundreds of new TLDs coming into the arena.

I hand registered a few 3D domains a couple of years ago and so far it has been a total failure, I have not sold any of them and I don't think they will take off in the next 5 years at the very least and after that maybe a new technology will come along rendering those domain useless. If you are going to keep domains for years that's lots of money that quickly adds up.
